Journey was HUGE for a while in the United States, especially from 81-86, they were one of the top touring and recording bands. Journey's greatest hits is responsible for a great deal of their record sales from 1988-2011 and outsells most of Bon Jovi's compilation albums. It sells between 250,000-500,000 copies per year and has sold 16.4 million since 1988...even Bon Jovi cannot compete with that.
RIAA/Soundscan breakdown
Studio Albums:
Bon Jovi Sold: 33.5 million
Journey Sold: 31 million
*Both bands have sold approximately the same amount of studio albums with uncertified and undercertified units.
Here's where it differs greatly:
Compilation, box sets, and Live Albums
Bon Jovi: 5 million
Journey: 22 million
*Journey's compilation albums have sold 4.4X as many albums.
Worldwide album sales are a much different story, with Bon Jovi selling over 120 million and Journey 80 million. Journey does not have the popularity worldwide like they do in the United States. Bon Jovi are massively successful worldwide.
