Last night, for the first time in 3 or 4 years I gave Red 13 another listen. I do not remember it sounding this good. It is not their best, by far. But it is better than what I heard before.
I always like the songs on theCD but never cared for the production on it. It sounded dull and uninspired. It is not the worse production, it just didn't have the big Journey sound.
So why was it different this time.
I did listen to it on my mp3 player instead CD cd
I did have new head phones
I am living in a different house from last time
I wasn't drinking or doing drugs last time or this time.
There is a difference, it had punch puinch to it, the sound still isn't big, but it isn't bad. The songs are still good, and I wish the band could have carried on more in this music wisesicwise) and carried on with Augeri.
Maybe tomorrow it will sound like it use to.....

At moments, I feel WAFTE is the best song Journey ever did in the post Perry era. Of course, credit has to also be shared with the outside writer on it, Andre Pessis.

Agreed. The band could use some outside help to jump start them. They are missing that 3rd person connection the use to have.

SOG and The Time are very much like some of the songs on Eclipse. Hard rocking and with a chorus that barely registers.

Especially when I'm contemplating the edge ...

I absolutely positively *hated* in "The Time" from Red 13. It's up there with I Believe from Generations as among the most irritating songs Journey has set loose in the Post-Perry era

I Agree with you about the Time, SoG is ok, WAFTE is great but so somber, sounds like queensryche, I know they wrote with Tate. Last song most ICB sounds like an Arrival reject.

"The Time" and "Believe" both has repetitive choruses. Other than that, the comparisons stop. "The Time" is another solid rocker from the Cain/Schon machine. Structure-wise and lyrically, it's fine. "Believe" is pure amateur hour. Not fit for listening consumption. Just horrendous.

Certainly it doesn't have the first class production, but I think Red13 was Neal's attempt at that point to test the waters with an updated Journey sound. More rock oriented, much like he pushed for with Eclipse. But, it was met with such resistence from so many that they reverted to more of their legacy sound. There are some good tracks on there, and if you take it on it's own and do not compare it with legacy Journey, it's a nice piece of work, and shows, IMO Augeri singing more like himself verses trying to inflect his own sound, but channeling towards being Perry-esqe to fit the Journey mold.

To each, his/her own... for me, I love The Time.

I have to agree, somewhat. Eclipse is dense in sound, it is like running head on into a wall of sound. Red 13 was like running into a brick wall. Some of that I think was due to production. So much more could have been done with those songs. Like I said I really like the songs on the CD. Listened to it again last night. Still sounds better than it did a few years back, but still not on par for Journey's production.

True, Both Red and Gen had Augeri sounding more like his Tall Stories and Tyketto voice. Which I liked.

I still really like "State Of Grace," but I don't listen to anything else off the EP.

me to i listened to RED 13 once and couldnt find a force strong enough to give it another chance........I have to !.......

I enjoy all 4 songs, but prefer "I Can Breathe". It really felt like they were working out their sound, and it really continued well at the start of Generations.

You know that's an Arrival reject, right? So is WAFTE. They should have cut out a few ballads and put them on the cd.

And so were the songs Mickey Thomas used and Jack Blades used on their solo albums. Out of the 21-22 songs we've heard from the Arrival session you certainly could pick a top 12 and make a REALLY strong album.
