Never heard it before, but I certainly have my doubts about that being Perry. Similar, but not strong enough.

I'm sure someone will doubt my ear on this one too (names won't be mentioned), but that is definitely not Steve Perry, and I'm certain that it's Mickey Thomas from Starship (as in Jefferson Starship).

Not Perry, not DGE...may be Mickey....may not be.

As others have stated, not Perry. Maybe we can get Lora to clear it up.

Sounds somewhat like Jeremey (and I mean that as a compliment). Def. not Perry. Def. not Chalfant. Kinda sounds like Mickey.

That is not Jeremey, and doesn't sound anything like him. We've discussed this before... I can't remember what the guy's name is but it isn't any of the singers that have been listed here. Someone here will know. I can't remember. It does sound a lot like a mix between Perry and M.T.. He has a great voice! I kinda dig the keys too, and they definitely sound like Cain's style.

So who can clear this up for us?

not Perry? really? I swear that's him at some part - bad tape playback / speed, 6th gen copy - there's some dead ringers for Perry's style - drum machine dates it somewhere 86-88 for me

I know it's a demo, but this guy sounds pretty thin. No way that's Perry, Jeremey, or Chalfant.

We should turn this into a fund raiser for Andrew and the site! Everyone agree to put ten dollars into a pool. The winner gets to double his money and Andrew gets the remainder (i.e. twenty dollars to the winner and Andrew takes whatever is left).

We can send the $10 to Andrew's account and he'll pay the winner the twenty.

If everyone agrees, I'll be the first one to send in my $10. (Andrew, you should post your paypal or preferred method of transaction info in this thread).

Post official statements that you're participating like so:
I, Story_Teller, am officially participating in the fundraiser and I'm betting: "this is Starship's Mickey Thomas singing on the demo in question."

Who's in? :D

after Storyteller's response, maybe I should wait a bit before posting this, but since chances of collecting would be lesser than winning the NC lottery...... ;)

the vocal is Gene Miller. Did a bunch of demo work back in the day. This is one of the few cds--maybe the only one--that was released with him singing lead. Actually, it's just demos also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaaDgy1ZzZg

blame reading the then-recent AOR Hard Rock Hot Spot reviews from many years ago now for knowing this one....

Can't speak for anyone else, but, I'm a man of my word, I'd have paid -- but you needed to accept the bet first!

So is this truly, truly confirmed? I read the thread link posted, but it still sounds a bit hear-say-ish. If it is truly confirmed, I officially stand corrected and will admit I was wrong. And if the info is accurate, Miller sounds like Mickey Thomas (trying) to channel Perry here. His inflections and vocal tone match Thomas oh so closely -- especially the way he ramps off his vibrato: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THgaBDFel70

Never seen it officially confirmed, and the only way would be ask Cain or Miller (and I don't even know if Andrew can find him as he's been silent for years), but vocal tone is the one thing you can't fake. It's why Perry, Augeri, Jeremey, Chalfant, etc. will each sound a little bit different, even when singing the same note. You can copy phrasing and even vibrato, but tone is unique to the singer.

Miller was just one of those demo singers running around for a while. Mark Free and James Christian would be in the same group---and Free did work for Cain at one time also on a song that was most likely a Bad English demo at some point, judging by the John Waite phrasing going on.

It IS very close to Mickey Thomas though. I'd give it a 95% chance of being Miller, 5% of Mickey Thomas and anyone else would be totally unknown. It's definitely none of the others listed. Was Mickey Thomas known as a session singer during his offtime?

p.s. it's a bit underhanded to accept the bet, knowing that only a search through the forum would have turned up that post, and the anonymity of Miller--thus being why I just posted the info.

Yeah, it's the tone I keyed into which lead me to think it's Thomas. The other thing that lead me was the nature of his vibrato. The fall off character is in line with Mickey's process. The singer in the link you provided (miller) sounds VERY close to the Cain demo singer, but the weight of his voice sounds fuller than the guy on Cain's demo. Could be he's using more of his head voice on the Cain demo in an effort to sound more Perry-ish, but that vibrato usage/fall off comes off different. Could chalk that up to an execution choice though. The demo isn't a very good quality recording so that mucks things up a bit in the ole ear canal.

Appreciate your integrity on the bet thing, but I'm stating publicly, I would have paid up. If I put my money where my mouth is I follow through. Thought it would be a neat, friendly way to maybe raise some money for the Wombat too.

I'm overseas now so I can't always respond, but I'd like to figure out if we can confirm if this is Miller or not. Just because I'm dying to know for sure.

To answer your question about Mickey and demo work, I think he dabbled with Schon and Cain at some point back in the 90's but I can't say for sure. Schon played guitar on a track or two of Mickey's solo release a few years ago, so there is a connection there.

the other question is if it's really Cain. I'm not even 100% sure that's him. The keys don't really sound like him--closer to maybe Tim Gorman from The VU/The View. It could simply be some AOR demo from the 80s that has nothing to do with Cain at all. I still remember that performance of Mr. Big's To Be With You that Deb went crazy over because JSS was on there (along with Bob Catley). Of course, she went crazy over the JSS vocal, and to the best I can tell, JSS doesn't sing one word on that song! He may have been singing, but the mic wasn't picking up.

I'd love to get the official answer as well on this song as well.

and to be fair and just...

Dang, that was cool. With a little polish and a tweek of the very basic drum beat, this tune should have been on ROR.

Not sure where I got this. Maybe Annie was the one who uploaded it. A Perry/Cain Demo (Nothing But a Heartache).

Well, that is Perry for sure. That said, I'd come closer to believing that it's a Street Talk demo and not a Perry/Cain demo. Sounds VERY close to the style of "I Believe", which would be a Perry/Randy Goodrum co-write most likely. It's definitely the Street Talk era judging by his voice.

You're probably right, though I thought the voice might be closer to the ROR sound.

It may be a ROR demo. It may be a Street Talk demo.....but I NEVER trust youtube for accurate information. My guess is Street Talk given the motown pop vibe.

Kg..., you're right, it has the I Believe beat to it. But, like Don, I hear more of a ROR tone from SP...plus, the chorus makes it more a Journey tune (for me).
