Will there ever be pro-shot footage of the Frontiers tour?

I was looking at the Live In Houston DVD last night at Walmart, but I'm hesitant to buy it because the Frontiers ere is really my favorite classic Journey era. Will a Frontiers live DVD ever see the light of day?

I've never actually seen any footage from the '83 tour that comes close to the quality of the Houston DVD. The songs in 83' were too fast for me anyway.

Does Frontiers and Beyond count? I mean it's not a full concert, but they recorded like mad to build that DOC, so there's got to be one full strong concert in there. Does Sony hold the leash or does the band/Perry? I'm guessing Sony.

NFL Films were the ones who filmed the Doc so I think they may have archived the footage, though to re-release it, they would probably need synchronization rights from Sony and the actual distribution rights from Starz Media who I believe are the most recent owners of a much traveled catalog from now defunct Media Home Entertainment, the original distributors.

Really? Wow, I would have thought for sure Herbie's video company would have been handling things. Nocturne was it? So the rights to the footage didn't lie with the band or Sony? Very interesting -- and surprising.

The live in Houston DVD is so good it is ridiculous. It is hands down the best live Journey DVD and on par or better with Captured. Do yourself a favor and buy it. I don't know how someone could call themselves a Journey fan and not love it. The Frontiers show from Japan in 83 is on YouTube which is very good too, but rumor has it Steve was sick during the gig. You wouldn't ever know it. The guy was a singing god.

Is this the show where SP was sick? I used to have the whole thing, but all I have left is what is on my Youtube page.

There were two shows back to back at the Budokan so was he sick during both performances?

I thought the 'sick' statements were in reference to the Escape era Budokan show here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3g-QXEh_rSU), not the frontiers era show...

regardless, yeah, what a shame the band wasn't more supportive of live show releases - could've been more like the Greatful Dead concept where they welcome bootlegs, and every live show was a different experience..., except with Journey, it was actually something you wanted to listen to!!

It's not the quality of the DVD that make me hesitant, it's the material played. The Frontiers material is my favorite classic Journey stuff. I think that if Only The Young and Ask The Lonely were on Frontiers, it would be the definitive Journey album instead of Escape

I agree with Navarro...how can a Journey fan not have the Houston '81 dvd already... this is the tour that saw their album Escape reached #1.... their very best album of all time, popularity-wise.

It has been said that SP was nursing a cold when the band arrived in Japan for those '83 concerts. Listening to him sing with that in mind, he does sound kind of nasally in those shows.

You may be right about OTY and ATL, Arch. As Herbie has said, they held those 2 songs out at the time to sell for movie soundtracks.. I, too, love those 2 songs. It did get included in the GH compilation....also, they added those 2 songs in the re-mastered Frontiers cd.

To tell you the truth, I thought the Houston dvd dragged a little bit when they played some of the older songs (I think they were still playing LOF, WWY, and SA on this tour), and you're right, I much prefer Faithfully, SHML, ATF...but, since this is their signature release, all Journey fans should have this. Watching this band at its height of powess is really awe-inspiring :D

I agree, the songs were rushed during much of the Frontiers tour. Some of the best live footage I've seen from that tour were the first shows from Japan.

The tempos they took on the ROR tour are just awful. They butched some great songs. Makes no sense. And what was up with Neal's guitar sound on that tour? Not good. Smitty was missed. The drums on that tour... I'm complaining!

Perry sounded best on Captured, which has the strongest vocals by far out of the band's live collections. I own Houston, Tokyo, and Frontiers & Beyond. Of the three, Tokyo is the best by a country mile. The performances on F&B suck and Houston is extremely overrated.

Journey / Perry on the top of their game. Stunning to know how long ago that was...

At first I thought this was a thread about Jeremey's band!

I'd also love to have a Frontiers era pro shot of Journey, since that album is actually the one that GOT me into liking Journey. I absolutely LOVE the Houston Escape concert DVD, but it's missing those great Frontiers songs. I don't even have the Frontiers & Beyond DVD. I missed out when they re-released it years ago. I have seen it (back when it was on VHS) but it's more of a documentary than an actual concert.

Even though I DO agree with everybody that the Raised on Radio tour was sped up for obvious reasons (I do have some old boots lying around somewhere) I still would love to have a pro shot of that concert too.

Somone mentioned the Budokan shows. I think I have copies of those. A sweet little bird from Japan shared them with me.

Rubicon sounds great! The tempo is perfect. I didn't know they had any shows that weren't sped up like that.

A Frontiers pro shot mastered to DVD will probably be the next project Steve Perry will get involved in if I had to guess. Why?

Because it will make money.

I agree with those that have a problem with the sped up songs on the Frontiers and ROR tours, and Neal's guitar tone was terrible on the ROR tour. The best touring year for the band was 1979. Perry's voice was still strong, they played songs from their entire catalog to that point, and the band just smoked. Thankfully, there are several great sounding boots from that era. It would be nice to have a DVD of the band with a couple of shows from 77-80.
