Are They Still Adding Dates...?

Postby JRNYMAN » Fri Jun 01, 2012 2:12 pm

... for this year's tour? Strange they're dancing all around PHX but no date announced yet. Last year they dropped Tucson for some reason which was really surprising since Tucson ALWAYS sold out as does PHX. Last year they played here in July of all times of the year and we filled the damn venue to show them the heat won't keep us away. Hmm.....

Didn't they just add a date for up in Montana?

Steve, I tried to buy tickets a couple weeks ago for Spokane, Northern Quest Casino and it was sold out already! Over two months away and sold out. I couldn't believe it. WTF!?

Tour dates, especially for classic bills, are all about local economies. It's the promoter that books the venue and sells the tickets (which can include security, the rider expense, etc). If the promoter can make a buck, then he/she does all the work & financial forecasting.

The bands' mgt simply publish an intent to play and their respective 'ask price'. It's up to the local promoter to negotiate the paycheck, according to what can be made in the current market. If for their biz, they can make 10%, after all is said & done, or if they can only make 1%, then it's their call to get on the bands' calendar.

In other words, if a band wants $100k, or if the collective bill wants $X-amount, then the local promoter decides what he/she can do, and makes an offer to the tour. The bands may or may not accept. If they do, then they play so many minutes according to contract, or they pass a city by.

I know from local festival experience, that a band playing Memphis one night, and then Dallas another night, will usually accept a bid, simply because it's just a road stop to them. They're traveling thru Little Rock anyway, or maybe go over to Tulsa on the way to Dallas. They may not get their full 'ask price', but still it's pay because it's an open night on their travel. Make sense?

Long story short. A band books major cities, or even only secondary markets as part of their initial intent, then fills in other dates as the season progresses...or drops intended dates, if the sales aren't doing well. And I think there's also a window of sale, or a point of no return...meaning that if there's not earnest money up front by a certain date, or regardless of sales by another date, then they play or they don't.

It sounds complicated, but it's really kind of simple...at least that's what my radio friends tell me.

To go a bit further, the tour manager knows exactly what everything costs.
Truck & bus fuel to stop & start again.
Roadie pay to load-in & load-out.
Pyro & lighting maint.
Gear wear & tear.
Lodging for the artists...lodging for the road crew & mgrs.
Tour riders - who needs what and/or demands what.
This is mostly all factored into the 'ask price' for a single band, or the collective tour. (Often you pay the headliner, and then they pay the supporting acts...but not always.)

The local promoter knows what all his costs are.
Venue rent.
Security staff rent.
City permit costs & various surcharges.
Advertising...to whatever degree.
Ticket printing & handling. (This is often a surcharge directly paid by the consumer up front. However, this also includes a promoter's maint fees to Ticketmaster, LiveNation, etc.)
Parking lot rental & parking lot security.
Any extra staff for just about anything & everything.
Paying for all the 'rider' requirements. (Sometimes, the band specifies that they pay parts of the rider.)

So the promoter has to factor in all his costs & forecasted profit, add the 'ask price' for the tour, and then decide if it's feasible...which directly results in consumer ticket price. That's why ticket prices vary from one date to another.

If the local economy can't handle the ticket price, then the promoter looks to cut costs...local negotiations & politics, and making an offer to the tour less than their ask. Also, he might ask local vendors or radio to help pay the bills in exchange for promotion. Likewise, if it's a really big item, then he/they can charge as much as they want. In addition, I know for a fact, that a promoter will lose money on one show, just to maintain relationships, and then make a ton of cash on another show.

Okay, I've rambled enough. I'm not in the biz, but have a few big money guys that are.

They've finally added 2 Ontario dates. Hamilton and Ottawa. I may get tickets for Ottawa, they go on sale this Friday.
