'Rock Of Ages': Does Journey Exist In The Movie?

In "Rock of Ages," young hero Drew (Diego Boneta) writes an original song for his new love, Sherrie (Julianne Hough).

This song is titled "Don't Stop Believin'."

Now, "Rock of Ages" is set in 1987, though no one seems to question the originality of Drew's new song ... even though it sounds exactly like Journey's version of "Don't Stop Believin'," which was released on the 1981 album, "Escape." Meanwhile, in another scene, Mary J. Blige performs a rousing rendition of Journey's "Any Way You Want It." So, admittedly, in the process of giving this scenario way too much thought, the question becomes: In the "Rock of Ages" universe, does the band Journey exist?

This question was presented to Hough, Boneta and "Rock of Ages" director Adam Shankman.

Julianne Hough: Not at all! I think Drew is Steve Perry. Right? Can you imagine if Drew actually wrote that song? By the way, that would have been a really funny outtake if someone would have [accused him of stealing the song]. And, probably, that would have been Alec Baldwin or Russell Brand.

Diego Boneta: You know what? That's a very good question. [Pauses] I don't know. I mean, my character writes "Don't Stop Believin'" -- which, obviously, is not what happened. And then "Any Way You Want It" ... I mean, I don't know! Maybe Journey got inspired by seeing Drew at the Bourbon Room with Sherrie and Stacee Jaxx? Then they just took the song and ripped it off.

Adam Shankman: You know, I think the band actually does exist because, I think, people are wearing Journey shirts at some point. They just didn't write that song. And, by the way, I think we probably had to pay dearly to say they didn't write that song.

I know from the commercials that besides Journey, that Foreigner also have a song/s in the movie, and I've heard that Survivor's "The Search Is Over" is supposed to be in the movie.

If any of you see the movie, please let me know how prominently the songs by Journey, Foreigner and Survivor are featured.

Ugh, as much as I love Journey I would rather be boiled in oil than watch Tom Cruise pretend he is a rock star...and his glee cast wrecking every great Rock song of my era. Rock and Roll Sacrilege.

Saw it last night with my wife. Journey is prominently featured.

In the opening scenes, you can see the lead character, Drew, wearing and E5C4P3 t-shirt under his vest
The opening notes to "Oh Sherrie" are played (SP, not JRNY, I know)
Drew pens DSB and plays an acoustic version for Sherrie
Huge anthem around AWYWI
Same at closing for DSB with full cast

It crossed my mind that they could have played LTS instead of Every Rose Has its Thorn when Drew & Sherrie break up.

The movie wasn't all that bad, say 7.5 out of 10. If you grew up in that era and you can suspend disbelief for a bit (which is what movies are often about), then you can have a very good time. Don't stay home just cuz it looks lame, it's not. Just a bit campy.

7.5/10 is a fucking masterpiece in today's Hollywood.

Just saw it tonight. I am an 80's girl and this movie was made for me. I was surprised that there was quite a bit of comedy, though not fully intended I don't think. I don't really like musicals but I went for the music...

Mary J just did Anyway on Goid Morning America.

It was ... okay.

Much more entertaining on her own stuff.

The comedy was TOTALLY intended! The entire musical was full of laughs. I think the movie adaptation has just made it too confusing for people to fully understand.

Glee is based on HS glee clubs...this movie? Based on a broadway musical. Musicals have acting and singing. Everything musical gets compared to Glee now. I think everyone has forgotten what broadway musicals are.
