Schon bewildered by Perry silence

Journey guitarist Neal Schon doesn't know why former singer Steve Perry won't take his calls.

And he admits the band considered hiring Michael Bolton as their new frontman after Perry's 1987 departure -- but didn't think about it for long.

Schon takes part in a question-answer session in Classic Rock Magazine No.176, on sale now.

He says: "The last time I spoke to Steve face-to-face was when we did the Hollywood Walk of Fame eight years ago. It was good -- but there were so many reporters around, it had to be. To this day I don't understand why we can't just pick up the phone and talk."

Bolton's name came up but was quickly dropped because Schon had previously recorded a track with the singer.

"Michael was a little eccentric,"he reflects. "I played the solo in his version of Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay, and Bolton made me re-do my solo about 200 times.

"We thought about him for a second. Michael definitely had pipes -- he was pretty bionic when I worked with him. But even then there was a lot of personality clashing. I didn't feel we would get too far, that's all I can tell you."

Another former collaborator, vocalist John Waite, who worked with Schon in Bad English, recently described Journey's music as "super-white."

The guitarist says: "I got a good chuckle out of it. I mean, John is a great guy. I love John. I loved working with him when I did. But to say Journey is ultra-white is really off the wall."

Reacting to Waite's statement he'd rather "shoot himself" than regroup with Bad English, Schon says: " I think maybe John has got a few chips on his shoulder. Whatever's not right in his life, I think he should change it."

In the full interview he discusses the band's battle to recover from Perry's final departure, his $50m lawsuit over starting a relationship with reality TV star Michaele Salahi, and seeing an alleged picture of his penis on national TV.

I'm more surprised that Neal wants to talk to Perry, than I am that Perry doesn't want to talk to Neal. The way he left the band and all..................

I might have seen that SNL episode. I remember Father Sarducci throwing pebbles at a window that was supposed to be Paul McCartney's room. Eventually Paul McCartney comes out in a robe and Linda soon follows and they are bullshitting for a little bit. That was in '80 when the show featured McCartney's prerecorded video "Coming Up".

I love that SNL bit. If I recall correctly, Michaels said something about them giving Ringo less money if they want? The other funny thing is that the money amount offered for them to play on the show was really low, which was of course part of the joke.

Yep...a big time promoter took out a full page ad, offering them $1 million to reunite. Lorne Michaels offered $3k, and said that they could split it however they wanted....they could even give Ringo less if they wanted to. For as cool as it would have been for them to actually show up on a whim, I love that they both thought about it and together said "....nah."

Sounds like Schon is in a good place. He is countering Waite's bitter grapes and toxicity with some positive vibes. A Journey + Bolton one-off would've been interesting. The Hunger is pretty much a Cain/Schon/Bolton album anyway. Seems like after Perry, the band really wanted a guy with no ego. Hence, Augeri over Chalfant or Bolton or Mickey Thomas etc....

I'd love insights into the brief "Chalfant" era of Journey.

Schon is in a very good place right now...whether, you like all the crap or not.

Journey's resurgence has enabled Neal Schon to take and live on the high road. The same for Jon Cain. (And btw, the same for Gregg Rolie.)

Forget about Eclipse...whatever it sells is just an add-on. The classic Journey has not only always sold, it's selling in concert darned near every night this year. Pat Benatar is selling, and so is Loverboy. (AP, the middled-aged, yet highly energetic, multi-voiced, hired-gun gets accolades too!)

Here's the deal - there's nothing else going on right now, aside from politics. I mean, what other major artist tours are there right now? None...absolutely NONE. This is perfect timing (praise Azoff if you want) for all things Journey to reign.

This gives Neal Schon the very right to question, diplomatically, Steve Perry...and yes, John Waite too. Notice I said 'diplomatically'. Schon is not about to trash talk anyone. And the truth is, he probably doesn't want to anyway. He's older, more mature, and past all that crap.

His 'very good place' right now is all about praise, praise for everyone. Taking the high road, only makes him stronger. Oh, and btw, Jon Cain's latest 'olive branch' to Perry makes the same perfect sense.

The Waite comment was deserved... the Perry comment wasn't even warranted... I thought Arnel was their singer now.. Schon needs to stop talking about Perry and make the Journey conversation about Arnel, the guy that replaced the guy (JSS) that replaced the guy(SA) that replaced perry... but he can't.. or won't. It's easier for him to talk to the media than it is for him to get his ass to Del Mar and talk to Perry, privately.

IMHO, I think the real reason Neal talks about Perry is because it's "good for business"... but isn't it long past time to let Perry finally fade away into retirement/whatever (like Perry WANTS) and put the focus on Arnel, where it's deserved? At this point it's no longer "lose Schon or Cain and there's no Journey" it's "lose Arnel and there's no Journey".

Regardless whether one likes Journey now or hates em, Arnel has saved the band, and deserves to not have to take a back seat to Perry whenever a band member speaks to the media.

I think these guys need group therapy, where you put 'em all in a room with a professional and talk it out in a safe environment.

Then, after that, maybe they could write some killer songs together. Even IF Steve decided not to tour or sing in public, they could all benefit and if Steve

Cain's passivity and restraint has always been amusing to me, since he could probably beat the shit out of Neal and Steve simultaneously.

In our CBS interview, Neal said he's tried to call Steve a number of times but said "he just does not want to speak."

And if Steve Perry read that or heard that - it would hardly make him feel in any hurry to get in touch with Neal again.
