Thanks for the link. I am definitely going to downsize my guitar rig and get an Axe FX in the next year or so. I love my 90 lb Mesa Boogie 2x12 combo, but it's just too damn heavy and takes up so much space.

Man, that Mesa Boogie sound is right up there with Marshall for me. Excellent equipment, Matt.

I have a discontinued amp called the Maverick. It's actually a lot more "classic rock" sounding than a lot of the modern Mesa gear (a lot of which tends toward a pretty heavy sound). Now, don't get me wrong, it's still way heavier and it has a gain channel that can do Journey, AOR, and even some metal (with the right EQ) decent justice, but it's a damn good amp. It's truly a crime I don't gig it at all anymore. It just doesn't get to reach its full potential... ever. Incredible amp for playing lead guitar at any rate...

Neal Schon is a douchebag. I love the fact that he is never mentioned in any guitar player lists.

They did find a good niche with that harder drive, I think. Lot's of metal bands use nothing else, Metallica being the biggest that comes to mind.

He's a major gearhead. That's cool that he knows so much about his gear. Great interview.

It sure seems odd to have Neal playing Journey music on a semi-hollow body. Frankly, I've never played a REALLY nice semi hollowbody, but in my experience playing decent ones, they are not guitars to use with AOR using that heavily processed sound Neal likes.

Nothing beats the $9,000 Neal Schon Les Paul they were pimping a few years back. That thing was awesome. If only I had $9K to blow on one guitar...

I've got a 12-string Ric that sounds great distorted, but yeah, I get what you mean. Neal plays with a LOTTA stuff on his guitars for sure.

Didn't Neal ditch Gibson right after the passing of Les Paul?

Those aholes at Gibson started using Neal's ideas on other guitars without telling him and he was out of there. Several retailers have said in trade mags Gibson are jerks, recently read their boss is one of the worst people to work for.

Sounds like grounds for a lawsuit, but it might have already been expensive enough losing Neal. So in the end they were butt pirates selling Neal's ideas as their own? Interesting and sad, as Neal had a very long relationship with them. Too bad they would stab him in the back like that! Neal moved over to PRS, indicating to Gibson, not only "fuck you", but you are not the only guitar in town. As I see it, appropriate action taken.
