Stale setlists and older bands playing covers

Heart doing this:

I absolutely loved this. There can be no denying.

I know Arnel has an arsenal of covers that he hs performed quite well. I'm getting tired of hearing the same songs, more or less, at every concert. It's almost getting boring and too predictable. Why can't they do a couple popular songs by other artists just to keep it interesting?

When Journey starts doing covers.. it's over...

Why? Heart does it and so do countless others. A couple wouldn't hurt and would add spice, but that's just this man's humble opinion.

Admittedly I go out on YT to keep up to date on performances. The internet sucks at this. Most recordings by concert goers sound like utter shit. Bands would be better served by uploading sound board recordings, sparing themselves the crappy sounding vids from amatuers. If enough did this we could get a more accurate take on the events.

Heart has been doing covers for decades live... that's why the fans accept it, and are not surprised or pissed by it. Journey has never done covers, and it would go over like a lead fucking balloon, especially to the people paying $100 a ticket who would miss "their song", the one that the band would omit for the cover... Journey would not survive the transition.

Actually Journey did do covers on the ROR tour. Oldies, two Elvis tunes if my mind recalls correctly. The idea was that these "oldies covers" fit with the whole "Raised on Radio" theme.

My Opinion, if you are Journey and you are going to do a cover, make it a classic rock tune (late 60s, 70s era) that people would know, but not one that was a major hit and change it up a bit to make it your own.

Part of the reason people go see concerts is to celebrate the artists who inspired the fan's emotional connection to the work. The way to spice things up is SUPPOSED to be with new music from the band itself. If the band has to play covers of other band's songs to spice things up, it says they're losing their audience and it won't be long before attendance reflects it.

Heart has always covered homages to their roots, so it's expected by the concert goers. In fact, the fans would feel like something is amiss if they didn't do it. But more importantly, they can get away with it because they have all their relevant original players in place, especially the lead singer.

When the original singer does it, it's cool. Comes across like an homage or tribute. Different perception when a replacement singer, who's already singing songs they didn't originate, performs even more songs they didn't originate. At that point, the band is truly karaoke. Why pay a premium to see a karaoke band?

Yeah I remember that.. and it was 1986.... 25 years ago....

I think the statute has run and out they've effectively reverted back to "never having done covers"...

to be fair, they did a Santana song during some of the 2003 shows when they were on their own without any other bands. That said, they have never really done much for covers, so I don't really see them changing now, nor do I want them to really. If you they, at least take the advice above....known, but not a signature song that you can make "Journey".

Yeah. If the decided to do one, I was thinking along the lines of what HSAS did with "Whiter Shade of Pale". Not that song per say, but I always did dig that version of the song.

I'm not a fan of cover songs being done by a band that has been around for a long time and has a lot of hits. Hell I'm not a fan of a band doing covers in general unless they are a band that has like 1 or 2 albums out. To me it's the band saying "Hey we're not confident enough in our own music". I'm a fan of The Black Crowes and they're a band that changes their setlist every night and every night they go out and do multiple covers and I think it takes away from the show. I saw them at a gig in Philly a few years back, it was the last show of 2007 and the band played 7 covers out of 14 songs and I thought the show sucked because of it. I mean if I want to hear another artists song, I'll either go see that artist in concert or pick up one of their albums. If the cover is in place of a solo I'd be OK with it, otherwise don't waste my time.

I feel ya, but the song that made them famous.. "Hard To Handle", is a cover of an Otis Redding song..

They've got enough original material now that they could effectively eliminate all covers (including HTH) from their set.. but I think for them covers are just their way of having fun...

I agree with HTH, but they recorded/released and had a hit with that song. Don't get me wrong I don't mind them performing a couple covers because that's what they do and if you go to see mutliple shows on their tour the chances you'll be hearing the same songs multiple times is slim. I'm not a fan of seeing them go way overboard with the covers because a lot of their back catelog and even their unreleased songs are great. In general though I don't like covers.

please no. Even being a Survivor fan, I wish they wouldn't play the song. Desperate Dreams could work as a Journey song however.

They also did Auld Lang Syne and Stand By Me at a New Years Eve gig on that tour also.

Hard to make out. I don't recognize it, but this doesn't sound like it's Frontiers tour to me. I think it's a sound check clip from something on the ROR tour, and I think it might have been broadcast on radio (you can hear the announcer make a comment over a mic early in the clip, like they're watching/listening in prep for the show).

Could be nothing more than Perry improvising lyrics and melodies to some random sound check jamming. Pretty damn cool though. Thanks for posting.
