Good tune. Dated, but good. I loved what Hunsicker/Frontiers did with the piano-only intro arrangement a few years back.

Well, this is all just gossip  , but pretty sure the song was about Jon's 1st wife, Tanie (sp?), daughter of the cowboy actor Doug McClure. Somehow, she ended up going overseas (France) and acting in soft-porn movies. This was back in the '80s. No idea currently.

The song was written by Jon and Steve. There were clues in several ROR promo interviews pointing to "Suzanne" being her. "Sue" or "Suzie" has been a name used in several Journey song lyrics. Apparently, Steve is fond of singing versions of this name in songs.

And, remember the Frontiers & Beyond doc ? the video when Faithfully is played, there's a shot of Jon, I think with a guitar strapped over his shoulder, looking forlornly at a photo taped to a mirror. The photo is of Tanie. He wrote Faithfully for her. I think they were very much in love at one time...got married... then, had a bad falling out. Without evening mentioning names, Jon revealed that both he and Steve had just gone through broken relationships (Steve with Sherrie--as we know), and that getting together to write some of those songs for ROR was cathartic.

Check out the lyrics to Suzanne. Knowing the backstory gives one a new perspective to the song....l

Just when I thought I knew all there was to know about the Perry era history... Thanks for the back story -- and you're right -- I'll never listen to the song the same way again! lol...

So no one knows for sure LOL

This is what I heard, that it was about someone famous at that time that one of the boys dated.
I always thought it was about Suzanne Sommers, she did live in Marin at some point.

And why the hell do you have to be a smart ass Steveo, you realize you DO NOT have to post right?

There are two previous references to a Sue or a Suzi that I know of. The lyrics in "Line of Fire" of course, and in the beginning of the 1978 Soundstage broadcast when someone off camera (Perry, maybe) yells 'Hi, Sue!". Could be total coincidence, but that's what I've got to offer! 8)
