If that isn't sold out, it's pretty close to it. Wonder why Manila did so poorly.

Escape and Frontiers seem to be the main inspirations for last night's setlist, as they were 30 years ago.
Eclipse did rather well in Japan (15k), probably selling more records there than any other place overseas. TBF was a huge seller there (190k). Surprised they didn't try to go with at least one song from either of those albums. I'm pretty sure that they did play WYLAW the last time over there in 2009.

Setlist from last night
Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)
Any Way You Want It
Ask The Lonely
Who's Crying Now
Only The Young
Stone In Love
Keep on Runnin'
Edge of the Blade
Faithfully
Lights
Stay Awhile
Open Arms
Just The Same Way
Escape
Dead Or Alive
Wheel In The Sky
Don't Stop Believin'

Encore
Be Good To Yourself

Setlist from March 1983
Chain Reaction
Wheel in the Sky
Line of Fire
Send Her My Love
Still They Ride
Open Arms
No More Lies
Back Talk
Frontiers
Rubicon
Edge of the Blade
Faithfully
Who's Crying Now
Don't Stop Believin'
Stone in Love
Keep on Runnin'
Any Way You Want It
Escape

Encore
Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)
After the Fall
Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'
Don't Fight It

A ton of thoughts here. First, I think they sound great. Second, third and forth, either Arnel is struggling with certain areas in his voice, or someone has taught him to sing in a way to preserve his voice. I hear him now going into his head voice, which he should have been doing all along, instead of powering through. There's a definite change in his voice, whatever it is. Kind or reminiscent of the change in Perry's voice from '81 to '83. With all of that said, I liked his singing and his stage presence in that video.

Finishing up SW right now. Arnel is sounding pretty fragile on the money notes. He's not terrible, but I wasn't impressed until the end note.

Oh, hell with those songs......heard em a million times.
I think AP sounds fine, as far as YT vids go. Looks like a packed house too.

Anyone got anything from Madison and Miles?

I head a little head voice.. but not on the parts he should have been using it on.. it sounds like its sort of occurring ad hoc.

and yea.. AP is definitely struggling with upper register stuff.. listen to the "In vain" part in SW.... or the parts he has to hold any high sustained notes.. clearly struggling..

not good.

True that. It was hard to listen to. Not as bad as Augeri yet, but it isn't sounding good for AP. Years and the catalog have taken their toll. AP should pass the torch while he still has some dignity and -- save what's left of his voice.

That`s probably inevitable despite their word about him being the last. Either we get a new singer or they put together a Queen Extravaganza style official tribute thing. Either way, they probably already have the next guy on their radar.

AWYWI actually sounds out of his range. He is pushing mightily to get up in that stratospheric Perry zone.

Andrew's front page has already started a rumor elsewhere that the band will release a live DVD from the show. I know that Japanese TV channel WOW WOW filmed the concert for a live simulcast as part of a Tsunami relief donation drive.
I don't believe the band itself recorded it. Hopefully, a clarification will be coming.

And on a side note, the film is #43 on the iTunes movie rental chart. It is #3 in Documentary rentals however. The Movie has grossed $25,000 at theaters so far.

Arnel does seem to be singing differently these days. Also notice there're points where the sound guy has his mic potted down. It COULD be that the sound wasn't great for Arnel, so he had to do what he could to get through it- which if you're a singer, happens much more than if you're a guitar player. In a band of Journey's caliber, the sound shouldn't be an issue, but we hear all the time that it is. I don't hear a rasp (like Perry in 83) but I do hear a difference in his approach. He's closing his vowels off a lot more than he used to.

I doubt Journey could get yet another new singer and still be a headline act.

Arnel's good for a few more years but even he knows he's past the halfway point with them.

I'd really like to see them go out on a high note. Maybe release a double album: A CD of 12-14 new songs and a live CD of the classics to boost sales.

Well said, the band sounds tighter than a duck's ass or nun, but AP is not the AP of 2008. Like I said, his approach is hard to listen to. Paging Kelty....Mr. Kelty...

What a piss poor setlist. Does the band realize it's 2013 and not 1983. I mean wow the youngest track in that set is Be Good To Yourself  Since the concert was being recorded you'd think the least they could've done was put either an Eclipse or Revelation song in the set to show that they actually have newer music out.

High note? If you watch the video, you'll find those are all but extinct.

Kidding aside, maybe Arnel should lift his chin up from his chest? A friend observed that his range improved when he extended his throat and neck instead of blocking the airway with his perpetual hunch.

The problem with singing Gid is that the real damage occurs before it become obvious... damaging the voice is like "death by papercuts"... every micro injury heals with scar tissue... re-injures and re-heals... and eventually starts to inhibit your singing range (you literally get a "hole" in your range). Keep singing and eventually you over-strain the damaged part and have a vocal blowout.

By the time you are subconsciously and/or obviously compensating by altering your singing technique and/or style, something is already wrong..

John Mayer developed a granuloma.. which is a growth that inhibits the vocal chord.. see here:( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmrf9WaqkZE ) After the 1st surgury it returned, and the doctor diagnosed that as long as his vocal chords remained in use (which they literally are 100% of the time) that the granuloma would not go away.

He has had 2 surgeries.. the 2nd in which the doctor literally directly injected Botox into his vocal chords... essentially "freezing" them from movement. This has allowed the granuloma to receed, and his voice time to heal.. but post surgery Mayer has already said his voice is different.

http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/ ... as-changed

"Everything changed about my voice," he tells Rolling Stone in a new interview. "I don't have the projection. My laugh changed. The way I used to laugh is kind of like that ‘I'm embarrassed,’ high-pitched laugh. I don't really laugh that way anymore. I've found new ways around everything – new ways to talk, new ways to laugh. Now I wonder if I can go right back to the shape of my voice that I had when I was singing once I can do what I want to do with it."

Isn't that why some singers put the mic up so high that they have to almost stand on their toes to reach it, to open the throat? I could have sworn Stevie Nicks talked about this during her HBO special in 1981.
Of course, after 30+ years, my memory may be hazy.

It's the only way a new album would sell at a level pleasing to the band, management, etc. The diehards get a new CD and the casual fans get a live CD of their favorites. The diehards get a bonus CD of live stuff and the casual fans get a bonus CD of new stuff. I bet it would sell 400,000-500,000 copies. Maybe sneak some Eclipse stuff into the live CD too. Possibly get Arnel and Deen another platinum record.

And maybe Arnel can spend the next year in a homeless shelter to beef up the marketing. There is wishful thinking and then...there is really wishful thinking.
