After Perry, this band ceases to be Journey I'm interested in if either Schon or Cain bail.

Only if Gregg Rolie came back to the fold. Even then, the 80's line up through Frontiers was by far my favorite, so I don't know how long I would remain "interested".

The Perry, Cain and Schon collaboration put out the most successful music in the bands history....they lost one...lose two and I think that's it for Journey.

I would miss Jon but for me the buck stops at Schon. If he bails and Journey somehow becomes a continuing cash cow, I won't be interested unless it's handed to Miles or I'm singing or one of my friends in the tribute brotherhood are singing.

I would love it if Gregg would return but how would he handle playing Jon's songs. He's certainly capable, but would he be ok replicating them or would he want to do his own thing?
As for songwriting, it certainly would change. But in an era less constrained by traditional structure and more populated by niches, they could possibly flourish...well, except for the complete lack of knowledge how to promote the band in this new era...

I said in another thread that the simple songwriting Journey incorporated during the pre-Cain years actually might fit in well with what most artists are putting out there these days. I don't really think they could ever have a hit again though. They don't seem capable of finding their way out of a wet paper bag when it comes to promotion.
Really, if they release anything else, it has to be just because they want to. Sales have to be a zero factor in their decision.

I really think that is key....especially nowadays. It's also the reason the "soundtrack" chances is also a good way to go. We live in a singles world now. Write, record and perfect a single. Release it. Playit live. If it's on a soundtrack try to ensure it gets treated as a single. But don't rely on that. DIY

When it comes to soundtracks, Journey is competing against themselves, i.e. Columbia's Licensing Dept.
I still think Human Feel would have been a great addition to the Tron Legacy soundtrack and would have gave them a little exposure a few months before Eclipse debuted.

What we have in Neal is Journey 2013. They need to man up again and break with the past ala Eclipse and play the new stuff live and ween the elderly fans of the tit of the 80's. Then there may be another album......

Put it this way, if Journey came to town again armed with the dirty dozen set list I would not go to see them. But if they were to play Revelation and Eclipse music I would go to see them.
Having seen them recently for the first time my impression of the band was that they are burned out on their classics and who wouldn't be, it was sad to witness actually. Ross Valory was on auto-pilot just going through the motions and the rest of the guys didn't fair much better and Arnel did his best to keep the energy up. On video they play it up for the camera its not what I saw live. These guys are musicians first and as such need to create anew.
It didn't sell live because they didn't stick to their guns and play it live and ween out the 80's stuff. I don't want to hear DSB again I'm over it.

I think this discussion depends on whether the band is making new music or is simply touring the GH.
If the band was going to continue to make new music, I think the only way you can still legitimately continue to call the band Journey is with Rollie stepping in to replace JC.
If they simply exist to tour the GH, then it doesn't matter who is on the keys covering the sheet music. It will end up sounding pretty much the same I think.
If Neal quits, it's not Journey on any level. There is a very distinct character to his guitar that is not replaceable in Journey. He's a very spontaneous player who has his own voice on guitar. Can't replace him.
I really have no interest in seeing the band live anymore. Kind of over the GH tour and as technically good a singer as Arnel is, he doesn't do it for me.
Having said that, if I had to pick a wish list lineup that would get me to buy a ticket for the GH tour, I'd say:
Neal
JC or Rollie
Ross
Chalfant, Deen, Michael Bolton or Eric Martin (no particular order)
Steve Smith or Virgil Donati (I'm not a fan of Deen on drums)

If Neal leaves Journey, there is no Journey. Like he told Jon in 2007, if they didn't hire Arnel. he was retiring the band. Look at their facebook or website. it promotes Neal's personal life and his solo work as much as Journey's. I don't see him letting any band continue with the Journey name once he is done with it.

Just a hunch here - If Santana IV happens & is successful (all players amicable), and there's not an immediate Santana V, I bet Schon talks Rolie into reviving some 'original' form of Journey. Maybe not to record, but at least to get another tour or two as a potential cash cow. And even without Perry, as long as there are founding fathers in the band, they'll call it a farewell tour, rationalizing that they are the ones that started it all.
