Neal's Comments

I selfishly hope Neal's being truthful and his enthusiasm rubs off on the other guys when it comes to recording. But if what he said about Budokan being filmed means another live DVD, I'm sorry. Enough already. That will be the 4th live DVD in 12 years and the 3rd with Arnel. And from what I hear, Everyman's Journey is essentially a concert film. So call it 5. Do we really need another pass of virtually the same live dirty dozen set they've been playing since Augeri?

:(

Cool thing about Rush is that they've done 3 (almost 4), but they actually document the album they're supporting.

Journey doesn't tour to support albums anymore. They do albums to supplement tours.

Oh I know...just had to get a Journey jab in under Andrew's radar.

I didn't see it that way. It was more of a documentary.

There are no news songs on the Budokan setlist. Really, it would be a step backward if they release a DVD like that. The concert was filmed by a Japanese cable company for live television, not the band. I think if they did release it on DVD, it would be directed mostly towards that market.

And they call this the Eclipse tour...........

You can't get em to play one friggin song off the album anymore, nor from Revelation.

I feel like you do, Steve, but if you look at it from the band's perspective, why would you play the new songs? They're playing in front of audiences that sit down, go to the bathroom, or get a new beer when they play the new stuff and then jump up and shout when they play the classic hits.

I would pay good money for my dream concert, which would include music from every album, post departure.

I would love a new live cd with a mixed up set list.
As for dvds....Vegas 2001 was cool. Studio magic or not, I liked that one. The Arnel ones I don't really watch.

The 2001 is great. 2 Arrival songs, La Raza Del Sol and an awesome rendition of Who's Crying Now.

Fair assessment or not, it does seem that Journey's selling their souls for greed's sake...if indeed they're going to release a live dvd from Budokan. Not one song from post-Perry... why would any long-time fan want to buy this?

I wish he always did the solo like that for "Who's Crying Now".

Manilla has a A LOT of new songs, though...and it's really high quality audio and video.

Actually, Manilla was filmed pretty well, had a great mix of tunes, BUT the sound to me wasn't great. I remember it being pretty muffled.
Yeah, another live DVD of the same songs... Is that really a good idea? For a band (or keyboardist) that seems so concerned with the cash outflow, that seems like not the best thing to get Journey fans excited. If they pop it into a new album with new music, okay, but another live DVD with nothing from Eclipse? Don't know if I'd buy it. Maybe they're filming it to go in with the DVD release of Every Man's Journey?

What'd be cool is that we know that there was a lot of footage of them recording Eclipse.
We saw the thing at the end of Every Man's Journey with them recording City of Hope. We've seen some other footage (also for City of Hope) that was turned into a video for the song- if they had a live DVD and a Making of Eclipse DVD, I'd like that. I love the whole behind the scenes stuff. I think that it probably only appeals to musicians, but I love that stuff. In fact, the stuff of Arnel backstage warming up with Cain and all the behind the scenes stuff was the best part of DSBEMJ for me.

The 2001 dvd's sound is really good, probably one of the best sounding dvds I have. I dont know what happened with the Manila dvd, but the sound on that one is pretty bad. If they are going to release another dvd, do one like Manila with quite a few new songs, possibly including some Eclipse stuff, and get better sound.

I really wish they hadn't cut Message of Love and Only the Young from the Vegas DVD. What a stupid, pointless move.

They also need to shoot it at a place with a receptive audience. The 2008 Vina Del Mar show is one that immediately springs to mind with an enthusiastic crowd, from start to finish.

That's gotta be why they went there for Arnel's first show. The initiation! It would be a blast just to be in a crowd like that.

Yeah, I'd say go to one of the Latin America countries or somewhere in Europe. No one in America seems to care anymore.

For me, that wouldn't make any sense either. Why package a DVD with NO music from the current singer with a movie all about the current singer?

Yeah, that is true. The chilean audience was explosive and they need to film a dvd with an audience that has that much excitement. Even the Wembley crowd seem to have more enthusiasum that most American crowds. There are a few places in the US like Detroit, Chicago, and parts of Texas that really rally around Journey also. Its always been weird to me though, that they have never played at Madison Square Garden in NY.

The concert was filmed by a Japanese cable company and was simulcast on television. It was part of a tsunami relief donations drive. The concert was also being shown live in theaters in the prefectures hit by the tidal wave.
If it is made into a DVD, it will probably only for the Japanese market but WOW WOW has not really released any of their programming to DVD so far.
As far as packaging it with Everyman's Journey, it won't happen here in the states at least. Two totally different companies. One distributor is an independent video house, the other is a satellite cable company. Packaging the film with commercial material also kills any chance of awards for the movie as it will no longer be considered an independent effort.

Agreed. Manila's audio is awful. La Raza from 2001 is a gem. Musicianship on display in that track is a reminder why you want to see them live.

Journey and Dp was a perfect bill, both are just tributes to one departed member, and it doesn't matter how good the new albums are , theyve both been doing sets that feature zero material from that new member.

Very true. That has to be my favorite DVD track by Journey. That's a bad ass jam session. In fact, I'ma watch that right now! :)

Often wondered if all of their live recording isn't done for immediate release at all, but more for historical documentation, and eventual release. Just as Journey has a history of GH records, having all the video tucked-away ensures (somewhat) that they'll sell for the next 20+ yrs. In other words, Journey music & performance will be re-produced and re-branded, perhaps as "never seen before" footage, for the rest of their lives...maybe beyond. Someone somewhere will buy it.

later~

I'd vote for something like that Graspop show from 2009...or the Download Festival.
