I like how "doing stadium shows with Rascal Flatts this summer" turned into one date in Pennsylvania in the midst of a scattered schedule of secondary markets. They outwardly said this is the only North American date with RF this summer in the announcement yesterday.

I'm curious as to what is more pathetic the fact they need RF to sell tickets or the fact that they're touring with RF in the 1st place.

And it's not even a stadium.

The Star Pavilion at Hersheypark Stadium opened in May of 1996, complementing Hersheypark Stadium for summer concert performances. A more intimate venue, The Star Pavilion can accommodate up to 8,000 fans in both reserved seating in front of the stage and general admission lawn area.

I think it will be configured for 30k, not 8k.
The Band Perry is part of the Rascal Flats tour so I see this as either both bands being on stage at the same time (ala Crossroads) or Flatts closing out the evening.

Agreed. Rascal Flatts will not be opening for Journey.

The PR people got it wrong, it should have been labeled as Rascal Flatts, The Band Perry and Cassadee Pope featuring special guest Journey. 20K of that 30K capacity will be yuppie country fans.

Why are people having such a problem with Journey performing the Rascal Flatts? They're both great bands. Some act like the white prom queen just went to bed with a black man.

Their performance with Rascal Flatts is one symptom of a creatively ailing/complacent Journey. In the early 2000s, they were regularly playing ~20 song sets, playing La Raza Del Sol a lot and 3-4 songs from Trial By Fire/Arrival. There was a short revival in 2009 (Lots of live Revelation and Arrival material) Now they're doing shorter sets, performing no new songs, and talking about not recording anymore. In the time they could be playing new material, they're playing dumb b-sides like La Do Da and Dead Or Alive that basically go over just about as well as new songs. They're really trying now to capitalize on appealing to soccer moms and country yokels.

I get it. Nobody but them knows the reason for such stupidity, but I suspect that somewhere down inside there is an insecurity in the band that people aren't going to hang around for anything but the old hits. There is great music after Perry, but unless they take a chance and play those songs nobody is going to care about them. If they'd play some newer songs and actually put some energy behind them, instead of acting like they don't want to be there, ie., Cain looking bored, maybe they could pull off some really good shows. Unfortunately, their paycheck is reliable as things are and there really is no motivation to change anything.

It was only a few years ago we were hoping Journey would be out there with hard rocking acts like the Scorpions opening for them. Now, here we are with Journey setting the table for a Country band to close out a show? This might be just too much of a 180 for some folks.

Personally I think its kind of cool that Journey is doing something different and touring with a country band that is really popular. They both have a lot of hits, family friendly music, lots of ballads and mid tempo songs. I think I would go see them if they both came close to me.

I believe the venue is going to be configured for over 30,000 plus.

What happened to the several stadium shows that were suppose to happen?? Another joke in my opinion. At least do a series of 5 or 6 dates in markets like Detroit, Boston, NY, Nashville, Dallas or Houston, and LA.

That's kind of how I feel about it, when I buy a Journey ticket I'm paying to see a good rock concert, not a county music concert with a rock band thrown in for good measure. I'm not a country fan at all so I don't want to pay that kind of money when I only care to see 1 band on the bill. Country is the hottest music on the planet right now and I feel like they pulling a Bon Jovi and selling out to make a few extra bucks from the country cash cow. Def Leppard and Slash with Myles Kennedy are playing in Canandaigua, New York this summer so I'm hoping I can make that one instead.

Not only that, but they had those extended versions of AWYWI, WIS, DSB and Open Arms. 2009 tour was really great. And then they make a really edgy rocky album in 2011. Things seemed to be perfect. Then they did two straight years of triple bills with a GH set....and I don't even understand what 2013's vision is?

It's a pretty smart idea...the vast majority of the 100s of thousands that have bought Journey concert tickets over the past 5 years aren't also listening to Scorpions or Whitesnake or Deep Purple...the majority I'm willing to bet are listening to their Top 40 country station.

Country music today IS NOT country music. It's all those old guys that used to write rock songs in the 80s now writing songs for sensitive emo looking youngsters who play the fiddle. Journey basically has nothing left to say to that "core fan base" that was rocking out to Separate Ways in 1983.

They are boogie-boarding across the outgoing tide of whatever pop culture relevance they can still make a buck off of before deciding if they're ever going to do a one off with Perry again or just retire gracefully to pursue other interests.

Funny story, I was talking with a door man at a venue a few years ago and he was asking me what was up with Journey lately...He says, "yeah, Steve Perry quit totally so he could focus on his son's country music career - they're really starting to take off!" I go "Well, Jon Cain's daughter has a country music career, is that what you're talking about?" And the guy says, "No, Steve Perry - His son is in that band 'The Band Perry,' that's his son in the band, that's where that name comes from!" I just said, "Oh, wow, that's pretty cool..."

I wonder how many people think that for real?

Too funny! My 8 year old daughter thought that The Band Perry sang Don't Stop Believin' because she knows the name Steve Perry.

She also knew who Steve Smith was from the time she was 2 because of the autographed picture I had in my music room. She would call him 'Deve Mitt." One time I was in the kitchen and I heard her yelling "Deve Mitt! Deve Mitt!" A commercial for Deal or No Deal was on the TV and she thought Howie Mandell was Steve.

Not 100% confirmed but it looks like it will follow the blueprint of the Crossroads show where both bands will be on stage at the same time. Unless you're a big fan of BOTH bands and don't mind them covering each other's songs, or a shorter Journey set list, you may want to think about this one. Definitely wait for final word on the running order though.

I have no love for country music, but Rascal Flatts is one hell of a talented band. I'm not saying that I'll go see this show, but I can see where the draw would be. Musically, I think Journey is on par, but they're lacking vocally, when you compare the two.
