Neal & Carlos Santana to record new music!

Saw this status update from Neal just a few minutes ago on Facebook...

I ran into Carlos yesterday and by the end of this summer we will start planning to go into the studio and record...

I'm looking forward to this if they're able to follow through.

From what I understand, Rolie will be there too, and they are reforming the old Santana.

It will be a Santana album as in the band Santana instead of a Carlos Santana album. There is actually a difference.

I thought that I had read that Journey are supposed to be on the same tour as Santana?

AEG handles Santana while Journey is under Live Nation so I'm not sure how that will work out. I could be wrong but I think Santana charges a bit more than Journey for tickets too.

I thought that I had read that Neal had said that it would be Journey and Santana touring together? But I was probably wrong?

But I agree, a Journey/Santana tour would be awesome! Have Neal play with Santana every night, and Gregg sit in with Journey on some songs every night. There are probably a lot of people who love one of the two bands and kind of likes the other, but who wouldn't bother seeing the band that they only kind of like, unless the band that they love is there too. If that makes any sense to anyone other than myself?

An example is that I always go see Journey when they're in the Cleveland area. I like Santana a lot. But I would have a hard time paying out big money to see them. But if they were on the same bill as Journey it's the best of both worlds.

A Journey/Santana co-headlining tour with no other bands involved would be huge, they could sellout very large venues on a nightly basis.

They should call the whole event "snooz-a-looza".
Journey will open with SW, then bring you down a few notches. By the time Santana hits the stage with their "even older dudes", half the audience will be, either asleep, drunk, or gone.

I went to see him when they performed at the Atlantis Hotel Casino showroom back in 2007 (or '08). There was a Bikers Convention happening in Reno that week. Was hoping to hear a Journey song or 2. At one point, one guy in the next table shouted out "play some Journey"... but nada. It was mostly their own stuff (think they had a new album out at the time) plus 2 or 3 Santana thrown in (BMW, Evil Ways, some all-instrumental tune). It wasn't a long show ... just over an hour, less than 90 min. After the last song, an announcer said over the mic that there's a table set up outside the doors for a Meet & Greet with the band. Just for such an opportunity, I had the foresight to bring along one of my Journey cd's (to get GR's autograph on it). It would have meant, of all the guys in Journey, Gregg is the only one I've ever gotten to see in person.

Anyway, everyone stood around waiting for the guys to come out, me clutching my cd insert. A little while, 4 or 5 of them came out a side door and sat behind the long, white-clothed, table. We got into a line and proceeded to walk along the table. There must not have been many long conversations, lol: as I remember the line moved quickly. Gregg was sitting next to the Drummer (name escapes me...has a "W" in it..), me being a small person, thinking "gee, these guys are big!" Both guys are husky, 6-ft'ers. Gregg was everything I envisioned... distinguished looking gentleman...soft, smooth voice. As I got to him, I leaned over a little, quietly said "Hi Gregg, always loved your singing, from your time with Santana to Journey." He looked at me, smiled, said "thank you" as he signed my Journey photo insert. Then, I mustered out "You didn't play any Journey songs tonight." He said they have played Journey songs in the past. But the band currently was in a different phase of musical direction. And, that was it. I thanked him and moved on .

Yeah...didn't GR say he has gotten back to his Santana roots ... so, I think he's passed over the Journey (pop) sound altogether. And, the drummer who's been with him for a long time... his name is Ron Wilsey (sp?), that's close.

Ron Wikso. He was the drummer that toured with The Storm in support of their first album, and played on their second album. He also was with Foreigner for a while.

I wanted to ask about just one of the hundreds of songs that you mention in the book and that is ‘Song of the Wind,’ of which you write, “To this day I listen to ‘Song of the Wind’ and break down inside hearing [original Santana band member] Gregg [Rolie]’s playing on that one. No solo, just a simple, supportive organ part that is not flashy or anything but supremely important to the song.” And you go on to mention that the original Santana band was coming to an end during the session. Share your thoughts on that song, and then update us on the return of the original Santana band.

I brought that song to the band. I kept playing it as a jam and I played it over and over again and I said, “We gotta record this song.” [Former Santana member] Neal [Schon] plays so beautiful, Gregg played magnificent — and to me I think I just spilled over what I was feeling because I knew it was the end of that era. It was like the Beatles breaking up. We couldn’t put it back together because Gregg and Neal [who left to form Journey] were pregnant with their own vision.

So that song quotes [jazz and blues guitarists] Grant Green, Gabor Szabo, Otis Rush, and Neal quotes everybody from Eric Clapton — but it sounds like us, and there are beautiful stories within that song. I’m happy to say that Neal is the one that brought the band back together. He stayed on me like a laser beam for about a year, chasing me everywhere, man — restaurants and shopping malls — and he would be there and say, “Man, Carlos, man, we gotta do a thing together, you and I, man.”

And then he says, “You know, I wanna do something with so and so and so and so,” and I said no, I don’t wanna play with so and so and so and so. And he goes, “Oh.” And I said there’s nothing wrong with so and so but I don’t wanna do anything with so and so. I said, I tell you what, why don’t we call Gregg Rolie and [former Santana band members] Michael Shrieve and Mike Carabello and go that way. He goes, “Oh, okay.” And so we went this way and we’re gonna do ‘Santana IV.’
