Briefly glanced at the interview. Did Schon say that? Why can't these guys write new Arrival-quality material? Fucking lazy.

There are 3 audio parts and in the 3rd he talks about this. He said
something to the effect that there are songs on them - especially Red13 and Generations - that people don't know and could use improved sound and Arnel's voice on them. He added they would choose some of these and add some new songs to go along with. He also said that some fans as well as himself are tired of the monotony of playing pretty much the Greatest Hits and he'd prefer Evening With's.
Reading between the lines I'd say Journey isn't doing what he wants Journey to do.
I'm all for giving Red13's songs a second chance with Arnel's voice and better production - I feel like Generations kinda got that treatment with Faith in the Heartland and Place in your Heart (as a bonus track) being on Revelation. I'd like a live version of Higher Place on a new album with Deen-O on lead.

Journey now seems to have some strange George Lucas-like obsession with tinkering with product that's already out there, and should be left to stand on its own. Does Neal really believe that putting Arnel's voice on "Butterfly" will make it a better song? And in my opinion, the audio production upgrades they keep assuring us will be coming never do. At this point, the best way to interest the fans in taking a second look at the Augeri-era catalog is to play it live.

and there is the real crux of the problem... whether its new or re-recorded older material... they still have to play it live.. I have no faith that they'd ever forego any of the DD and replace it with anything from Generations, Red13 or Arrival..
They really do need to embrace the modern, short attention span, social media using public and get with new way artists promote.. Facebook, Youtube, placements in film, commercials...
...simply recording something and getting to radio is not how its done anymore..

Does anyone know if sales for the "Evening With..." tour did really poorly? Just wondering where the opposition comes from to deviate from the DD.

Schon has said more than once that the band was ready to kill him for that 3 hour show. So I'd guess Schon wants to work and Cain doesn't...and its grueling on the vocals.
I saw them alone in 2009 and they drew about 10k in the Rochester, NY area. They drew about 6k more than that in 2011 with Foreigner/Ranger and about 2k less than that last year with Benatar/Loverboy. The price was more than half less in '09 than either of the last 2 years but it was all theirs...so someone more knowledgeable can break down profit differences, etc. Also, 2009 and 2011 were at Darien Lake while 2012 was at CMAC, which is 50 minutes east. The 2009 was the only weekend date of the 3, as well.

I think Cain is more a fan of the legacy/ballad sounding stuff.. and given the bomb that Eclipse was.. he's gonna have a bit of leverage with Neal now. He's even said that in recent interviews...
What I find ironic is that Neal, not even 6 months ago was talking about how "there's no reason to do another album, because we already have tons of Journey legacy hits... that there's no reason to write anymore legacy sounding stuff."... yet here he's talking about re-doing stuff that is more legacy sounding...
The problem isn't just the songs.. it's HOW they are marketed... they need to smack Irving in the head and tell him to get off his ass and hire some young folks that can get them in the social media mix..

Except that every post-Perry album of original material has flopped, including the very ballad-heavy Arrival. Cain has no leverage.

Ah. I only read the printed interview. Thanks. In a previous interview, Neal said that Arnel loves Arrival, maybe he wants to re-record it. There's not really much on Red 13 worth re-recording imo.

like I said.. it's how they're (not) marketed... and I agree without Perry its gonna be hard (or impossible) to get traction..

Where Journey is or isn't is because of their refusal to properly promote newer material through the modern means available today. I think management is staid, caring not to move forward, but to go out and play the normal short DD setlists, sweep up the money and go home. AR just posted in another forum that Paul McCartney played a 38 song set tonight. He still cares about providing a quality show for his fans, as there is something for everyone in there. Paul is freaking 71 years old. Poor Journey. They must get so tired out there. They could cover more tunes if they would utilize the talent they have on board, sharing songs between Arnel and Deen. Hell, even Neal and Jon can sing. Maybe it's time to bring in a female vocalist for some relief.
Can anyone here tell me honestly that there would not be a great show to be played, just playing music from TBF, Arrival, Red 13, Revelation and Eclipse? There is a hell of a good setlist in those five albums, if chosen properly.

Maybe they can shoot Augeri, bury him in the Endzone at the New Meadowlands and simply pretend he never existed. This whole idea is disgusting. Neal can make his own original albums of new material every other month yet for the band that has brought him his fame, he wants to regurgitate past failures and see if he can capture even more disappointing sales this time around?
If he, Cain and Pineda think this is a good idea and actually do it then it lends validation to the premise that Pineda is and will always be nothing more than a hired gun, brought in to simply help put a new coat of paint on works done by others.

Oh, I know that. But as long as my comment has been noted on the internet and has a chance of coming up in a Google search, I've done my part.
It's come to the point where even talking shit about the band brings no satisfaction. I think Gideon and many others here have come to the same realization, hence the lack of comments these days.
With that being said. half of the stuff Neal talked about in this interview seems like little more than wishful thinking on his behalf. Sort of like how the idea of playing ATT Ball Park this summer turned into nothing more than a show at the San Francisco Yacht club in September.

Is it possible this is another legal decision based entirely on the bottom line? Perhaps for all these years, they've had to pay Augeri to put Arrival and/or Red 13 songs in the set (as they did Perry). Does re-recording those songs with Arnel free them up?

I really would find that hard to believe. And the legal arrangement worked out with Perry, as far as I'm aware, isn't due to his amount of writing credits.

More along the lines of when you are rich and you divorce a wife. You're gonna pay like a motherfucker.
