Radio Ad for A.C. Concert

Postby Art Vandelay » Mon Jul 22, 2013 11:17 am

Just heard a radio ad for the upcoming Journey/Rascal Flatts show in Atlantic City. The promo feature Don't Stop Believin', Stone in Love, Lights, Separate Ways, Wheel in the Sky and Anyway You Want It...all Perry's version of the songs. My wife, who isn't even a big fan, said "wait, didn't they get a new guy who sounds like Perry, and even made CDs and DVDs with him singing the classics?" Me: "yep." Her: "wow...what a dumb PR move on them to try and sell this show!"

Such a shame.

Not sure -- but doubt the band itself has any involvement in the local promo ads. More than likely, it's the promoter.
And if it was YOUR job to sell the show, which versions would YOU use?

I'd be VERY surprised if the band had anything to do with it. Way too busy doing other things. Your anger is misplaced.

Thank you, Annie! I'm still quite swollen, but stitches come out tuesday and I'll find out what's going on. Should not be so swollen at this point. BTW, I sent you a PM a couple days ago. Please check your inbox. :)

The radio station in Hershey, PA did the same exact thing earlier this year.

I wasn't aware. Dang....this new messageboards format is not as good as the previous one Andrew had... no bold alert on top of the page to let you know. And I changed my email address ... so, probably notification of PM went there. :D Anyway, just read it ... no harm, no foul. Over the years of being here, I've learned to not take anything posted seriously. Everybody is a character, in their own minds ... Peace!

There's no anger, nor wish for a witch hunt behind my post. I lost faith in or concern for the band back in '98. Just sharing something that I heard with all of you...Steve Perry era material (including songs that HAVE been re-recorded and HAVE been used for advertising) being the highlight. Seems like most of you have been so critical of his era material still being the highlight as of late anyway...no?

This issue has been brought up and discussed since the SA era. I agree the band probably has no input (or rather they really don't care to be bothered) with how they are being presented re upcoming concerts... leaving it up to each local sponsor and PR people. The early years seemed to be much more egregious as isn't that what prompted SP to insist that they post a sign at the entrance stating -- "Steve Perry is not playing with Journey tonight"?

I think Journey at one time did hear rumblings, especially from perryfans, accusing the band of intentionally misleading ticket buyers into thinking SP was still playing with Journey. I recall Neal being quite defensive over this matter and took to posting on BackTalk (long-time Journey official fansite messageboard, now long-defunct), setting the record straight. Then, all of sudden, you start hearing that excerpts of songs being played in promoting upcoming concerts were SA-versions taken from the 2001 dvd. Hmmm..

I have to say that in the recent years when Journey played Reno, the correct lead singer's voice was used in the promo spots (sounded like the AP remakes in Revelation).

Well, as things relating to Journey seemed to be crawling along at snail's pace, nothing wrong with recyling topics to get more attention, right? :D

The commercial that I heard was for the venue (an Atlantic City casino), not for the radio station itself. Just seems to me that they could (or should) have input on how they are advertised. That's what PR departments are for.

Yes, everyone knows at this point that they have another singer. His story is a big part of what helped put the band back on the map recently. I just find it a bit head-scratching that the band goes so far out of the way to promote Arnel's talents (releasing a new version of the greatest hits with him singing, live concerts released on DVD and played on VH1 Classics, and a documentary about him), yet Perry's material is still used to promote the band. Especially when they keep preaching that they're moving forward, not to mention when they're also starting to get more and more flack for playing the same-old same-old.
