Augeri Fans Know How to Partaaay....

Augeri is renowned for holding concertgoers spellbound during his sets. I know. I've seen him live enough. This footage typifies the quasi-religious experience that grips his fans unsuspectingly by the balls. Otherwise ordinary sane decent people just completely lose their shit.

LOL, am I the only one that envies that guy? Good for him. To me, that's what it's all about. Maybe Jeremey can answer this, but after long touring hours and set-lists night after night, in that moment, what is better for the performer than to see that?

More importantly, I'm sorry -- but Augeri sounds TERRIBLE.

Am I missing something, or is Steve performing for about 25 people?

Eh, he's never been able to pull off Higher Place live.

Someone posted something about zipping up the vocal cords, and I'm pretty sure that's what he's doing to sing now. It doesn't sound as good as it did to us anymore, but it sounds fine for someone who hasn't ever heard him before, I think.

Man, this is NOT a good moment for Steve here. That's gotta suck for him. I can't imagine anything more frustrating for a singer then to have reliability issues like that. Man, I feel sorry for him here.

I love the music and have been here for awhile. Learned a TON from this community. But I'm no musician. If I may ask, what's "zipping up the vocal chords" mean? Singing in a higher register because he can't be in pitch anymore?

LOL! I think that's fuckin' great! Whatever music you may dig, be it Augeri, Journey, Mr Big or JSS or whoever.......I love seeing people lose themselves in the music and the moment. For some people it takes a bunch of drinks to loosen up but for some it just takes hearing a great ol' tune ya love, LIVE. Ya only live once, enjoy the hell out of it while you can. :D

Just a few minutes into Faithfully...sounds pretty good to me.

EDIT: SW is serviceable as well.

I never heard of zipping up the chords either. But since leaving Journey, SA has definitely altered his approach to singing. He does nearly eveything is a very thin head voice now. Maybe Brywool can explain more.

I noticed that at the Mt. Airy show. There were times when he let loose, but for the most part, he was singing very softly. Rangewise, he was in good shape and absolutely nailed that falsetto scream in Higher Place, but he did sound very thin through a lot of the set.

Speaking of singing styles though, I threw in the original Tall Stories cd in the other day, and man, does he sound good on that one. I don't think he ever quite regained that form during his tenure in Journey. You heard moments of it on Generations, but that confidence, raw enthusiasm, and I dare say, a little bit of soul (see Restless One, especially). He never really got that back again.

The way I understood it, if your vocal cords are like and open zipper when you're singing full voice, zipping them up, like zipping up a zipper, leaving a smaller opening when zipped up, allows someone to hit a higher note than they otherwise would have. It has a different sound. Not as weak as a falsetto, but not as strong as your full voice.

Never heard of that technique before...I've heard of full voice (or chest), head voice (clear tones but not quite up to falsetto), and then falsetto (or that "airy" tone). I think you're talking about head voice here. Whatever it is, Augeri sounds downright awful on that clip of "Higher Place". I love the guy, but dang!

Another Augeri fan getting down to the soundtrack of their life. To hell with the Arnel lineup, Augeri solo shows are clearly where the party is at.
