Agreed...although, to be fair, since the original version is top-notched, anything else is 2nd-rate.
Also, the Houston '81 is when SP was at his vocal peak prowess, while Arnel obviously is not, anymore.
In a way, I feel for Arnel...Journey is at crossroad with their live performances now. The Arnel-loons (based on their comments) will always think he's the best since sliced bread...the casuals can't tell the difference or don't care...while the hardcores (at least those who frequent here) have something we loved to draw from, and it's those standards that Arnel continually must meet in (our eyes and minds).

Not an easy job for Arnel, by any stretch, but he is keeping the Journey engine running. That cannot be denied. Like him or not, he is the man of the hour. Also, this was Neal and Arnel time, just acoustic, with no band backing, so comparisons are moot.

Stvo...not wishing ill-well on anyone...but, I wonder just how much longer will Journey be on the road.
Getting on PBS with the documentary is certainly a coop... I've not seen the film yet, so will probably watch since it'll be free (I am after all a Journey fan  ).

Being a card-carrying perryloon that I am, I didn't have any personal interest in "Arnel's Story." But, since they're going to be showing it on public TV, I'll probably switch it on. What is the time of broadcast again?

Hopefully this quiets any talk of Arnel losing it.
He sounds superb here.

Bullshit....

The version Arnel sang is approximately the same tempo as the recorded version.. and Arnel, while his performance was great.... simply sang the song. Singing with only acoustic accompaniment is an opportunity for the singer to carry the song with his voice, and Perry would have killed this acoustically.. Arnel should have been able to do that.

I for one am content with him merely "singing" it. Guitarists can overplay, singers can oversing with theatrics and histrionics. That's why I generally prefer singers on tracks rather than live, Perry included.

I can agree with that Gid..

I didn't mean "singing" it in a "Mariah Carey, I wanna shoot myself in the head" kinda way.. I meant it more that there is nuance in the expression and phrasing that Arnel simply isn't even attempting to do (that Perry did on record)... and what bothers my most is that Arnel is quite capable, at least physically, of singing that way.

It also strikes me as odd that Schon, who says he had a magical chemistry with Perry, hasn't pursued that with Arnel. It's what made Perry so great.. not the power.. but the expression and phrasing.. which seems to be lost now.
