Journey with Arnel Pineda (2007-present)

Journey started in 1973 as a collective of former Santana bandmates, with Gregg Rolle on keyboards and lead vocals. They hired Steve Perry to sing four years later and immediately saw a huge surge of popularity. Rolie is a great singer (that's him on "Black Magic Woman"), but Perry has a tremendous gift with pop songs. Much to the chagrin of his bandmates, he lost interest in the band in 1986, and a 1995 reunion fizzled out very quickly due to Perry's health problems. The band grew sick of waiting around, so they brought in Steve Augeri in 1998. Fans said he looked like Steve Perry with a perm. Even his name was similar. They parted ways in 2006 after Augeri had some voice problems (fans even alleged there was some lip-syncing). Jeff Soto was briefly brought in, though he never quite fit.

The band grew desperate and came close to hiring a Steve Perry impersonator from a Journey cover band, until they stumbled across clips of Filipino singer Arnel Pineda on YouTube. He had Perry's voice down cold, and fans were overjoyed when he came into the band. Ticket sales skyrocketed. The dream remains alive that Perry might return one day, but until then Pineda is at the helm.

My opinion on my 3 bolded points:

1. I agree about the non fit of JSS, but I also think he's a great singer, just not Journey enough.

2. Steve Perry impersonator? Jeremey - tell RS to go fuck themselves!

3. I'd love to see Steve Perry return, but I don't feel he ever will and I don't believe he could pull it off. I also believe that who is at the helm is the best option at present time.

LOL, thanks Steve - it is what it is, in the end (throughout history), it's been the "victor's" side that always goes down in the history books. Nobody gives a shit really ... I don't give a shit except once or twice a year or so I'll see some sideways slam at the "Perry impersonator" who didn't have enough power in his voice.

Well, this is "what was..." and I know it was good enough at the time, so for Rolling Stone and Neal and anyone else who remembers things differently ... there will always be YouTube*, right JC? LOL ...

Had you carried on with Journey, would you have sang the DD as you did in Frontiers?

Hey man! Not sure what you mean by that ... do you mean would I still have sang them the same way as I did with Frontiers? Or would I have tried to change up the arrangements or pushed for deeper cuts?

Is that respect for Journey from Rolling Stone? I thought I would have died before I saw such.

J sounds amazing in that clip. Guessing that was the night that Neal and Cain stopped by? Anyway, besides Jeremey, Soto and Augeri really are getting the shaft here in this article. Especially Steve Augeri. Why does the RS article really only mention Arnel and the years 2007-? The band didn't pull a Genesis and throw in the towel w/ Augeri. They toured with Augeri for a decade.

Thanks man, no Cain & Schon came to an Alive After Five performance in downtown Charlotte NC. They hid on a park bench down the block and Neal sent his GF to secretly videotape the performance, then we met up after the show & went to dinner.

See, the cool thing to do here would be to show up at your gig and sit right in front. Of course, you're going to ask them to sit in with the band, and the fans would have loved that, and all the while Neal and Jon would have gotten a much better idea of how you sound live.
