Journey guitarist and Oklahoma-born Neal Schon will become one of the newest members of the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, the organization announced Wednesday.

Schon will be introduced as member of the Music Halls 2013 class at the sold-out Journey concert Friday at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

Schon has been with Journey for all of the albums and tours, making him the only member of the band to remain through the years.

"We've been talking to Neal for quite some time and finally the stars all aligned to make this happen," said Micheal Rappe, assistant executive director of the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

Schon was born in Oklahoma but grew up in California. Journey was formed in 1973 after Schon worked with Santana for several years.

Journey took off in the 1980s with Schon as lead guitarist. Megahits like "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Open Arms" launched the band to fame.

Those songs were on the Journey album "Escape," which has been certified nine times platinum and went to No. 1 on the album charts in 1981.

Schon also worked with the band Bad English and has produced several solo albums.

Induction ceremony to be held over two days

OMHOF induction Oct. 14, concert Oct. 15 at The Joint

This year’s Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be a two-day affair, said OMHOF Executive Director Jim Blair.

This year’s group induction will happen in October, Blair said. On Oct. 14, there will be an evening induction ceremony at the OMHOF museum in Muskogee. The next night, there will be a concert featuring performances and video bios of all inductees, plus a full concert performance from the most recent Rising Star Award recipients, Muskogee’s Swon Brothers. The museum is not yet releasing the inductees’ names, and ticket prices haven’t been set, though they hope to get them on sale by mid-September.

Blair said the venue change for the induction concert is a necessity.

“We have to turn this into an event that helps us be self-sustaining, and that’s why we have to go to the bigger venue, the bigger market,” Blair said. “Out of 15 induction ceremonies, less than half of those have been profitable, and only two were profitable to the extent that can sustain our operations. We’ve had a hard time selling them out in Muskogee even with the low ticket prices we had.”

But, the first inductee since 2010 will be inducted Friday. OMHOF is taking the induction ceremony to the Journey concert at Hard Rock Casino’s The Joint. Neal Schon, founding member and lead guitarist of Journey will be inducted during the sold-out concert, Blair said.

And though it may seem unusual to induct someone at a concert instead of a group ceremony, Blair said the OMHOF has to be innovative these days to get the job done and to work toward becoming self-sufficient. Among the innovations are a new schedule and location for its traditional induction ceremony and new programs meant to inspire future Oklahoma musicians.

Blair said the City of Muskogee Foundation has been trying to help the museum “get on its feet and stand alone” for three years, “so we have to be innovative to build a reputation statewide, nationally, even worldwide.”

And the OMHOF has a plan to do just that, he said.

“We’ve got some cool programs in the works,” Blair said.

Among those are the Country Talk show, which is in the works for November, and Songs with a Purpose, a program featuring Jermaine Mondaine and Oklahoma musicians and producers.

The Country Talk show will feature musicians such as Roy Clark, and will be a round-table discussion for people hoping to break into the music scene, Mondaine said. Songs with a Purpose is a project meant to inspire future musicians.

“Most Halls of Fame set out to preserve and promote, but we want to take it a step further and inspire,” Mondaine said. “We are trying to inspire, trying to nurture and create the next wave of Oklahoma musicians.”

Songs with a Purpose is sponsored by a grant from the Ruby Family Trust, which is meant to support underprivileged, minority youth, Mondaine said.

Oklahoma musicians and producers will work with underprivileged minority youth in Muskogee to produce a music CD, with the youth learning about the process from start to finish.

Oklahoma's own Music Hall of Fame inducted its newest member Friday night.

The Hall of Fame inducted Journey guitarist and native Oklahoman Neal Schon at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

Schon has been the only constant member of the famous rock band since it formed in 1973.

The guitarist and vocalist was born on Tinker Air Force Base.

You can thank him, in part, for hits like "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Any Way You Want It." He helped write those and many more, but don't play them if you're ever around him.

He said he's over the novelty of hearing his band's music on the radio.

"I switch it," Schon said.

Neal joins the likes of Woody Guthrie, Merle Haggard, Blake Shelton, Ronnie Dunn and Carrie Underwood, among others in the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

CATOOSA — Journey guitarist Neal Schon doesn’t remember much about his brief time in his birthplace, but now Oklahoma will forever remember him.

Schon was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame on Friday before a sold-out crowd at The Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa. “I’m still pinching myself, not sure it’s really happening,” Schon said before the induction ceremony. “I’m shocked by the company I’m keeping now.”

Schon was born on Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City before he moved with his family to New Jersey as a young child. He then moved to the San Francisco area, where he picked up a guitar by the time he was 10. At 15, he was playing with Santana. He went on to form Journey, play with Bad English and record several solo albums. He said he was working to put together a box set of his work recently and that the records were stacking up. “There’s just a huge body of work,” Schon said. “A lot of different bands, a lot of solo work.” He’s best known for his work with Journey, one of the most successful pop-rock bands of the 1980s. Schon is the only member of the band to be there from its start in 1973, for every album and tour, and the only original member still performing with the band.

When he received the crystal award from officials with the Hall of Fame, Schon thanked those who played with him before to help build his work and the fans who kept him going.

“It’s extremely special to have this here in Oklahoma,” he said.

Officials with the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame said Schon has been on their short list of artists to include for several years.

“Neal has been on the radar for a long time,” said Jim Blair, the hall’s executive director.

Communications took place between the hall and Schon’s representatives, but with a packed tour schedule and new albums to release, Schon didn’t have time to come to Oklahoma for an induction ceremony at the Hall of Fame’s museum in Muskogee, so he was inducted at the concert venue, he said. Schon said his inclusion was so flattering that he just couldn’t believe it at first.

“I thought someone was playing a trick on me,” he said.

Blair said that considering Schon’s influence on music, his induction is a great addition to the Hall of Fame.

With Schon on guitar and co-writing several of Journey’s megahits, such as “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Lights” and “Wheel in the Sky,” the group was launched into stardom.

One of his greatest memories is going onto the stage of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., before a crowd that filled the stadium.

“All I recall was getting on stage and hearing that roar,” Schon said. “Lighters in the audience like a football stadium Christmas tree.”

He said he noticed that his music changed as he kept working. His influences in jazz and blues helped him develop as a band member, someone who would work with the other elements of the band to make a more complete sound, he said.

“When (former lead singer Steve Perry’s) vocal is over, I have to take off where he left off,” Schon said. “After I learned how to play the guitar, I wanted to learn how to sing through the guitar.” Schon showed the audience his talent in a solo rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which brought the crowd to its feet.

He said his growth continues with his latest solo album, “The Calling,” released in 2012. That growth is what he said keeps him recording and touring.

“That’s the cool thing about music: It’s never over; you always keep learning,” Schon said. It’s also what he hopes young musicians know. Schon said his son is learning to play the guitar and that all the equipment is just that without the work and practice.

“You are going to have to do the work. I can’t do it for you,” Schon said he told his son. “Play all the time and get in front of as many people as you can.”

Mine, too. It's nice to see them performing those. It's nice to see Neal getting recognition. He's a great guitarist and deserves it.
