X Factor "Open Arms" The Kyria's "Don't Stop"

I expected to see this mentioned here a couple of weeks ago, but I guess nobody watched this season's The X Factor. I almost missed it myself. I'd stop watching when they got rid of Lillie McCloud and Joshua Levi. But the night before the finale I flipped back to Fox in time to catch Jeff Gutt sing "Open Arms" for his final song. Jeff ultimately didn't win. The title of X Factor winner went to new Sonny & Cher lite Alex & Sierra. Simon Cowell will promptly drop them off the face of the Earth like he did Melanie Amaro :x .

Yes sir, every singing competition knows that if you want to manipulate the audience into falling in love with you, you must cover Journey!!! Jeff Gutt's "Open Arms".

This sampling of "Don't Stop Believin'", I randomly found on the internet. I don't know what the legalities of using the song are, I haven't heard it on the radio, but what do you think? The Kyria is a rapper. Don't let that stop you from listening, it's a very positive song.

Does this mean that Arnel needs to start looking over his shoulder? Good Lord, he's not that good but he's young and attractive with a decent voice and the audience numbers would swell having him on stage but it should never happen! Arnel has at least another 4 to 5 years left vocally. Hope Neal missed that show! LOL!

Ryan White Maloney Sings "Lights" On The Voice

I didn't want to start a new thread for something so small. Here's Ryan White Maloney singing "Lights" on last night's The Voice. He got 4 chairs to turn around. Adam Levine said "You remind me of Steve Perry- who's one of the most bad ass singers ever", which got a cheer from the audience.

I didn't think he was that good. He went with Blake Shelton.

Very cool to hear Adam Levine say that about Steve. The Maroon 5 guys came to our office once when we were running their fan club and they were freaking out over all the Journey stuff we had on the walls (platinum albums, posters, photos, etc). We gave them a framed Journey poster from the Captured era and they put it on their tour bus. So cute.

P.S. I don't think that guy sounded like Steve at all. And his version of "Lights" was just....meh.

Lora is right, the kid was really good but didn't sound like Steve. You can't beat Christ on a Mic. :-) Long live the king.

Wow, really cool story Lora. Thanks for sharing!

I also do not think he sounds really anything like Steve Perry. Aside from his high voice, I don't really see the resemblance.

I think Jeff Gutt should have won. I thought his cover of Open Arms was ok, good but nothing to rave about. He did much better on other songs. I loved his cover of Imagine Dragon's 'Demons', thought he did a killer job on that..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pX5TO_-CztU

The guy could sing high, but I don't think he sounded like SP either, although it was kinda cool to here somebody cover 'Lights' instead of always the staples.........Open Arms or Don't Stop Believin.

To be honest, I'm still letting it get straight in my head that the man we all see now is the same man that is or was "Christ on a Mic" (by the way I love that). He's beginning to convince me now that I see him singing with Steve Ferrone! But for awhile there, he was just Steve Perry, the man, the icon, the legend, the man in black, the man who shall not be named, the rainbow shirt guy, lover of Kelli...but not the man who was rockin stadiums! Nothing wrong with that. Guess it makes it more interesting, if you know what I mean. And that's all I will say about that! Teehee!

I know what it was, it wasn't putting the face with the voice! Two separate entities! Putting it together by seeing him sing, makes it so much easier!

Are you still running M5's fan club? Did Bad @$$ Steve Perry ever get to meet M5? Sonny & Share the details! I wonder where they keep that Journey poster now.

I think the judges only turned around because they recognized "Lights" not because the performance was soooo good. It's like if you want to survive "Talent Night" on Showtime At The Apollo you'd better sing something from Dreamgirls like "And I Am Telling You" or "Changing". Definitely a case of it's the song, not the singer.

Journey needs to stop allowing Laddy, Dawdie, and Everybody cover their songs on national TV. They're stinking up the joint.

Kevin Chalfant is the Boogieman of The Journey Forum :P . If you say "Journey" three times while spinning around in a darkened bathroom- Kevin Chalfant will appear in the mirror singing "Don't Stop Believin'" and telling you he was in Journey Tooooooo -Booooooooo!!!!" Even when a thread has nothing to do with him, he manages to find a way to appear and make it all about himself.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYUoKn4yQ30

I'm curious as to how those two got together. And RWM was either deceiving the audience/doesn't have all the facts/was deceived- Chalfant was NEVER in Journey. To introduce him to the audience like he was- was dishonest. Still singing with KC was probably the highlight of his career until he got a 4 chair turn on The Voice.

I can't believe Ryan White Maloney is still on The Voice. I haven't been following closely since the auditions.

Tonight on American Idol it was '80s night- with covers of Blondie, Cyndi Lauper, The Police and some duets like Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton and Tina Turner & Bryan Adams etc. And of course Journey :) .

Caleb Johnson got the pimp slot to sing (surprise surprise  ) Faithfully. Randy Jackson was there as a mentor to let Ryan Seacrest remind everybody he was in Journey (8th member- second most famous  ). David Cook was the special guest mentor since he's an expert on adapting '80s classics. That man should be a bigger star. JLo mouthed the words along with Caleb, Keith Urban raised a cell phone lighter app, Harry Connick praised him on finally being subtle. Except for the fact there's NO SUBTLEY in "Faithfully" :D Another case of it's the song not the singer. It wasn't bad or an embarrasment. But if people are connecting to the performance it's because it's Faithfully. Caleb said it was one of his favorite songs ever. He's one of the better more memorable singers on this all around weak season of Idol.

Dont watch American Idol anymore, but I did catch Caleb singing Faithfully. It was decent, not the best I have heard, not the worst. Good to see Journey get another plug along with Randy Jackson.

The most surprising part of the whole thing...JayLo actually knows who Steve Perry is!

I was watching the preview of "Stars On Ice" for 2014 on NBC which is a tour of the medal winning and ice skating teams. For the finale they skated to (surprise) "Don't Stop Believin". I'm not sure if it was a cover version, the Glee version, or the Rock Of Ages-it was a guy and girl singing.

Then while looking for a video of it to share- I found a "Rock Of Ages" on Dancing On Ice version.

Saw this on tumblr.

This is from a kids talent show in Portugal (which is explains how they got the rights to sing it) where they have to impersonate stars. Here's a Lea Michelle/Steve Perry kidified "Don't Stop Believin'".

Kat Perkins "Open Arms" The Voice

I loose interest in The Voice after the auditions. When they make a charting act, then I'll care long term. I missed Kat Perkins sing this on the show. My sister and I were watching 2 weeks ago's The Voice and I heard the notes of "Open Arms" in the recap and knew I had to look up if they redid it recently.

Not a bad rendition, extremely "faithful" to the original. Brings nothing new to the arrangement except a female voice.
