Cannot be understated. Watching this just brought home how vitally important these 2 guys were to the band. Smith's drumming really was a big part of their sound. Schon rules here too, before all the effects.

Today's version of Journey cannot hold a candle to this band in any way, shape or form.

And any comparison between Arnel and Perry is just silly after watching this

Wow...thank you so much for posting this link. I'll never forgot seeing them play Just the Same Way live for the first time where Perry harmonizes with Neal's guitar notes at the end of the song. Loved it when they did things like that live!

Just listened to an awesome podcast from 2012 with Smith, love hearing him talk about drums , music and Journey as well.

I love the youthful sprite with which they pop out from the floor of the stage. This is a young, energetic band just shy of their peak. Great post, though no one needed to convince me of Perry or Smitty's importance.

Three thoughts:

Patiently was the encore? WTF?

Who was playing the power chords during Neal's solo on Kohoutek?

Good thing there wasn't an internet in 1980- there would have been all kinds of bitching because they extended a few of the songs.

Probably one of the crew. There were a few songs on the Escape tour where there was acoustic guitar played by a member of the crew, offstage. Patiently was a great encore. That tour was awesome.
