‘He yearns to do his own music’: Is Journey’s Arnel Pineda tiring of the Steve Perry comparisons?

Arnel Pineda has recorded two albums of original music with Journey, dating back to 2008′s Revelation. Still, the bulk of the band’s legacy — and his performances — are rooted in the Steve Perry era.

The director of Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey, which chronicled Pineda’s meteoric rise from unknown Filipino singer to Journey frontman, won’t go so far as to admit that he chafes in this situation. But Ramona Diaz says it ultimately puts an expiration date on the collaboration.

She says Pineda wants to make his own mark, free of the Perry mystique, one day.

“He knows that there is life after Journey,” Diaz says. “He talks about: ‘After this, I’m going to make my own music.’ So, I think he’s looking forward — not like looking forward, and every day yearning — but I think he knows there will be a Chapter 2 of Arnel Pineda, which will be his own music.”

Pineda has had his own successes with Journey along the way. 2011′s Eclipse became his second consecutive Top 15 album with Neal Schon and Co. Revelation has gone platinum — the first such success for Journey since the Perry finale Trial by Fire, back in 1996. But comparisons remain, even as Pineda establishes his own stage persona. After all, night after night, he’s primarily reanimating someone else’s work in concert.

“Arnel, in a way, will never be satisfied — and he says that in the film,” Diaz says. “So, I think he yearns to do his own music.”

I wish the kid the best, but I don't see much in the way of a successful solo career in his future. Maybe in Manilla.

If he ever does a solo show in my area I would love to go see him perform.

For Arnel's sake I hope his post Journey solo career turns out better than Augeri's post Journey career.

I know Augeri gets paid to perform in front of his fans, but I wonder if from a creative stand point if it bothers him that he's performing songs that he had no part in creating instead of trying to stand on his feet on songs he had a hand in creating.

The man tore up his voice night in and night out to have a hand in resurrecting Journey to continue touring and bring their concert to the fanbase. I don't think it bothers Augeri at ALL, nor it shouldn't. He put in his time, made several albums with the band and toured his ass off making remarkable money. Ego aside, these performers, especially at Augeri's age, live for the music, not self fame. That era of self fame is OVER. I'm just glad Augeri is continuing to do what he loves doing while STILL creating his own music in the process. Augeri gave Journey a second chance, but Journey also gave Steve A HIS chance. There should be no bother in that.

.... Then Arnel should WRITE some tunes, record some demos - even if it's with his own band - and present them to Jon & Neal. If his own writing chops are worth their salt, then he can start his own legacy NOW while people will care to listen.

Yea, good luck with that. Wake me when Fran Cosmo and Larry Gowan have hit singles.
Without Journey, Augeri would have no career. He knows it and is happy as hell to be able to tour and perform.
