New research proves what Guns N’ Roses fans have known for years: Axl Rose is one gifted singer.

When it comes to just about anything involving art, “best” is an extremely subjective term, but people love ranking and sorting things so much that we continue to try and order our favorite artists anyway. Our latest example comes courtesy of a new chart that attempts to determine the world’s greatest singers by listing them in order of vocal range — and Rose’s five-octave instrument puts him in the top spot.

The chart, assembled by Concert Hotels, ranks “today’s top artists,” and although you can probably guess a few of the singers who made the cut — the Top 10 includes Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera — some of the others might surprise you. As Consequence of Sound points out, the list includes plenty of classic rockers; in the top 10 alone, you’ve got Rose, Steven Tyler (no. 4), David Bowie (no. , and Paul McCartney (no. 9).

They all beat out Freddie Mercury (no. 11), and John Lennon (no. 13) outranks Elton John (no. 14); meanwhile, Roger Daltrey (no. 17) tops Bruce Springsteen (no. 19), while Jim Morrison (no. 23) beat out Robert Plant (no. 24). Meanwhile, Lou Reed (no. 40) has the same range as Eminem, both of whom come in higher than Steve Perry (no. 42). It's really all opinion as to whom is greatest singer.

My favorite vocalists are Steve Perry, Dennis DeYoung, and Freddie Mercury. IMO you can't touch those guys in terms of talent when they were at the top of their games and in terms of Dennis he's still at the top of his game to this day.

I heard a GNR song on the radio about a week ago, and I was thinking the same thing that I've always thought when hearing Axl Rose "Sing." I thought to myself "This guy really is one of the worst singers in history."

The guy is an absolute joke in every single way.

I need to dig out a magazine that I have from the 1990's where Paul Rodgers said something along the lines of that the first time he ever heard Axl Rose sing he thought to himself "Who is this pervert?'

Axl Rose truly is one of the top 10 WORST singers ever.

#2 Steve Perry
#3 Lou Gramm

I never got the memo about Axl's "five-octave" range back in the '80s.

Radio 104.5 in Philly posted the results to this. The poll wasn't for World's Greatest Singer, but rather the recorded vocal range of the world's greatest singers. According to the poll, Axl has the widest range recorded. Perry comes in at #43. Again, this is recorded range, from lowest to highest. And while the results may be true, the poll is very misleading. There is a big difference between hitting a note by singing, and hitting a note by screaming. I doubt that most of the people on the list achieved the high range by singing.

Also, Perry's real claim to fame was what he could do vocally while performing live. And we all know that he was able to sing circles around almost everyone on the list.

They need to hear Steve Perry singing at the beginning of "Captured By The Moment" (Deep voice) and then on songs like "Home Made Love" "Something To Hide" "Lay It Down" "Sweet And Simple" "Mother Father" "Keep On Runnin'" and other high range Journey songs that Perry sings on.

Exactly! Perfect examples...and those that were performed live during his prime were just as good, if not better than the recordings.

An example of a company (marketing team) deciding to make something controversial to get lots of press and thus bring attention to their brand. In this case, a website that will help you find hotels near concert venues.

So a smart marketing move ... True? Scientific? Accurate?

Absolutely not!

This list was put together probably in an afternoon by a couple of people listening to YouTube videos of a list of singers. Axl's cousin was probably one of those people

To be accurate, Steve Perry sings (in falsetto) an A6 during the final chorus of "Sweet and Simple," which is about the highest note I can recollect he's sung. In "If You Need Me Call Me," Perry sings an E2 at the start of the 2nd chorus ("to tell you the truth ..."). That alone puts his range at 4.5 octaves.

I listened to the GNR song and I couldn't even hear that note anywhere unless they're counting the multi tracked overtones and harmonics during Axl's final scream (which I still couldn't pin down to a Bb6). There is no "singing" of any kind hitting that note in that song.

Now if you want to measure that kind of screaming as "singing," we can look to King Diamond as the "World's Greatest Singer," and check out the song "Omens." King actually hits the note they credit to Axl at the end of the song in full head voice (Bb6), and there's other tunes where King isn't growling that he has a very low operatic baritone.

So that solves it ...

King Diamond is the greatest singer in the world!!

That doesn't make him the best, (far from it) but I don't know of anyone who can cover more of the spectrum with their voice than Axl can. (or could)

Can anyone here think of a singer whose speaking voice is bass, yet can get up high like Axl could? All our favorite singers here, like Perry or Plane, have fairly soft speaking voices, so they can't go that low. At lowest, some of the rock tenors might have a high baritone speaking voice. Axl is a bass.

Now whether one enjoys his voice is subjective, but the fact that his voice covers a lot of ground isn't debatable, and I think that's all that list is, is who has the biggest range.

David Lee Roth. He has (or had rather) a 5 octave range. He could hit the lowest of lows and could scream some seriously high notes. Granted most of those high notes weren't singing, but he could hit highs with the best of them.

True, but neither of those two can get as low as Axl.

And yes, DLR had that multi-octave scream, but he didn't sing with it, he used it for fills and the end of notes...he didn't actually sing verses or anything like that. Lots of dudes can scream like that. That's not singing.

He used his scream so he didn't have to sing. Now more than ever.

My problem with him is not his range, but his rather awful ability to stay in key when live.

Back to Axl Rose, this surprised me. But then again, I remember once having my eyes pop out of my head when he was voted "Best Keyboardist" in popular music ... over the likes of Billy Joel, Elton John, Keith Emmerson, Bill Champlin, Jon Cain, David Paich ...

I know Toto was never considered a "cool" band like Guns N' Roses, but come on. Paich on piano makes Axl looks like he's playing chopsticks.
