New Journey Album On The Way?
by Gary Graff Posted on 1/29/2015
http://www.wcsx.com/gmi/classicrocknews ... M3Vkzo5BjpIt's been nearly four years since Journey's last album, so we thought we'd check in to see what's on tap for a follow-up to 2011's "Eclipse."
The group will be on the road this year for 21 dates starting March 5 -- including six with the Steve Miller Band and Tower of Power, a pair of Mexican shows with Santana and a nine-date stand at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
An album after that? Maybe, drummer Deen Castronovo tells us:
soundbyte...
http://www.wcsx.com/gmi/classicrocknews ... M3W5zo5Bjq"We haven't really talked about it because right now we're touring. That's what we do. But Neal (Schon) was talking about possibly, if it happens, getting the (2005) 'Generations' record, the old 'Generations' record, and having it re-done with Arnel (Pineda) singing it. Neal is like, he's always spinning, like, 'What can we do? What can we do? He is this band. He is Journey. So if he decides, yeah, we should do that, I think it's a great idea."
"Generations" was originally recorded with vocalist Steve Augeri, who had to leave the band shortly thereafter due to health issues. Pineda, who Schon discovered on YouTube, came on board in 2007 and sang on Journey's last two albums, "Eclipse" and 2008's "Revelation."

And by "new Journey album" we really mean re-recording old tunes.
Most of the talk by Neal and Jon so far has centered around re-doing Arrival, not Generations. Plus the band already redid the best songs on Gens (FITH and PIYH), so, really, what's left? Either way, re-recording Arrival or Gens is a lazy idea.

Wouldn't put it past them to recycle the Generations "giveaway" idea at the gate. The only way they'll get money for re-recordings of mostly subpar songs. The band is both morally and creatively bankrupt.

The only song I would like to see rerecorded and this time actually pushed it Remember Me.
Its a shame how that song got demoted from the end scene of the movie to barely audible background clip (like Only Solutions that actually deserved not to be heard).
Journey has no hits on Arrival and Generations. What makes Neal think that substituting Arnels voice would make any difference, and no, do not touch the Deen songs. They are great.

I wonder what it would be like to have one singular voice on the whole Generations album? For all the grief Ross' tune gets, I don;t think Arnel would improve it. And I didn't really care for the few tracks already re-recorded with Arnel. But then again, I m biased towards much of the Augeri material...

If Generations is so good that it needs to be re-recorded, then why doesn't Journey every play any of these great songs in their set list?
I do think Arnel could have made a better Generations had he been in the band then and Journey seems to have remorse over the fact they went with Augeri. He wasn't all the singer that they hoped, but he actually did a lot of good for the band and helped them get back out there and build up a fan base again. Arnel might have worked out better, but the past is past. I don't think Journey should record any old songs unless they are live recordings. You can't go back and change history. Arrival, Generations, Red 13, might have been better with a different singer, but it was what it was and is what it is. What would you call a re-record of Generations? Generations 2.0? Is Journey Inc. going for the Microsoft business model now?? Really a lame idea all around.

when Augeri 1st joined the band he was flat amazing...
But man cannot escape Father Time's toll on the voice...
Remember that even Perry stopped singing the DD at age 38 (1987 when they went on "hiatus")
Augeri sang the DD in the original key, from age 39 - 45, and he did not have Perry's range to begin with.. it was inevitable that his voice would eventually break down.
Pineda is pushing the same envelope, having joined Journey at age 40...

I have to agree 100%. What can they possibly be thinking?

I consider listening to their re-records done so far to be an asinine waste of my time. And that is NO reflection on Arnel, but more of a reflection of a very lame idea from the Journey camp.

He absolutely was amazing. And it speaks volumes of Neal and Company, and not in a good way at all, to want to write Augeri out of the picture, like he didn't really happen or that he was some kind of a mistake, bad decision or whatever they try to call it. And to continue pushing with more re-records of their past just reflects an anal Journey frame of mind.

I agree, Gina. And I'm surprised to hear Deen say so callously that he thinks this is a great idea. All we've heard from Deen all these years is "Augeri is my bro." How can anyone in this band want the message to be "we have no new, original material" and because of that, we're going to re-write history and re-record a mediocre album? As it is, the best song on the record "Faith in the Heartland" was already re-done.

So the answer to the question is, no, there's no new album on the way!

Maybe this time around they will let Deen sing a couple of new tunes off his new CD...
Couldn't hurt...

As a casual fan of the band, its members and the music, I have no idea what is being talked about when people resort to
initials or acronyms. I have checked the Journey song list; nothing with the initials DD but I'm determined and eventually I will find the song that Mr Perry stopped singing for those two years; it's just a matter of time.

Why would you redo an album that sucked in the first place?

Maybe because they think they can 'un-suck' it.

What if they redo the best songs from Arrival, Red 13 and Generations? That might be interesting. Also include Remember Me.

going out on a limb here.. but it could it be Cain simply doesn't want to write new songs for Journey?

This track list with really good production quality and decent marketing might have some potential.
State of Grace
Higher Place
Butterfly (She Walks Alone)
Remember Me
World Gone Wild
Livin' To Do
With Your Love
Place In Your Heart
To Be Alive Again
Kiss Me Softly
Walking Away From The Edge
Live and Breathe

Why bother? And I agree with Scarab... "Butterfly" pretty much sucks.

Most likely. Neal has been recently collaborating with Blades on his solo work. Just call it Journey. Or better yet, give his one-time bro, JSS, a call. "Arrival" had alot of outside input - probably at Sony's urging. Cain/Schon may think they are above that.

Huh?!? When was Jon divorced?
Wow ... quite a surprise, shocking, actually (to me).
Liz ... his soulmate, mother of 3 (his only) children, the muse for his love ballads (many kind of cheesy).
After All These Years .... 20+ of marriage, more together before. Maybe uprooting the family homestead and moving to Nashville changed everything. Sad for the children.

Many of these comments seem to be upset and taking what Deen says of a Gens re-do literally. I don't think anything is really decided, and Deen's not exactly the spokesman for Journey. He's talking in general terms with this interviewer, just saying what comes to his mind, promoting the band's music at the same time. Doubt the band knows yet what they going' do, as far as making another record is concerned. Deen just knows people always want to hear about next records.

If they do Augeri era re-records, they should name the album 'Fuck Augeri- The 7 year mistake (Let's pretend it didn't happen!)'... This is a creatively bankrupt idea and fucking pathetic. If they do it, they will lose some of there serious fanbase, myself included.

This is now the second largest gap between albums in the band's history (ROR to TBF of course being #1).
