There is a South Detroit after all

I think the whole things seems rather silly to me. Are the cardinal directions inoperable in Detroit? Could I not go there and go to the southern most part, and say I am now in south Detroit?

Anyway, According to this article, it exists, and not for the reasons above:

I dislike when people mock the South Detroit line in Don't Stop Believin'. I want to see them write a hit song and then they can mock all they want.

I have ALWAYS taken it that Perry/Journey are only intending that to mean the south side of Detroit. Not that there is a city called "South Detroit." I think they mean it the same way as saying the west side of Cleveland, or the south side of Chicago.

Tempest in a teapot....if you are in the lowest point in Detroit, you are in south (small S) Detroit. Seems easy enough.
