I really don't think his voice would have been strong enough to hold out long term, too thin. An album would have been interesting though.

I like the song but when I listen to his music I feel like I"m listening to a performer trying to sound like Mr P and Jeremey is too talented to waste his money making songs that make me think of Trail by Fire or any other Mr P led Journey song. I think it would be different if it was 15 years ago and one day he woke up and out of the blue he started to sing and this was his voice but when it appears he's making a concentrated effort to arrange his voice to sound like Mr P than I'm disappointed. I believe Mr P did that similar thing when he tried to incorporate Sam Cooke's style of singing but goodness…Mr P's voice is crazy good. I think just believe who you are and don't make any special effort to sound like anyone else because people will call you out about it; just be Jeremey because that's good enough.

Don't know if you noticed but this song was actually written and recorded 13 years ago!

I will be the first to admit it is pretty cringe-worthy the amount of effort that went into sounding like Steve Perry.

Back then, as misguided as it was in hindsight, I did feel like I had to produce some music that could highlight my ability to cover Steve Perry, as we had just launched Frontiers at the time, and nobody knew who the band was or who I was. I really wanted to show off my higher whistle register at the time as well, as I hadn't heard any more famous guys like Augeri or Hugo who were doing that at the time (talking about the crazy high stuff from "Sweet & Simple," etc) so I through that into the mix as well.

It is what it is – A snapshot of where I was a long time ago ... I just found this hard drive with all the Elemental stuff a few weeks ago so I posted this tune for nostalgia's sake (as a Throwback Thursday post on Facebook).

Fair enough, YCMW ... I do know that from 2007-2011 I did a little over 600 gigs that were under much more stressful and less than optimal conditions than what a Journey tour would be. The injury and subsequent surgery that did permanent damage to my vocal cord was not due to recurring overuse (though that did change the upper register of my voice), but from a freak accident. Plus there are natural changes that take place in the male voice between the ages of 30 and 40 (the length of time I toured with Frontiers) that changed my voice as well.

We will never know how history would have played out, though, so it is what it is

Thanks man, glad you enjoyed the tune. Yes, getting fogged in the face during "Message Of Love" was the freak accident, then singing for another 4 days straight after that caused the vocal hemorrhage. Singing another 6 months without a break on top of the hemorrhage is what required the surgery, then after the surgery it was revealed I had a sulcus vocalis on my vocal cord. You are either born with that condition or in rare situations it can come around from laser surgery. There's no way of proving what was the case in my situation. It's not something you can rehabilitate yourself through, it just is what it is. In the past couple of years there's been some new techniques where a synthetic tissue can be injected into the vocal fold, but I've pretty much moved beyond it at this point onto other things in my life.

Yes, Frederick is my middle name, which is what I released my 2012 CD under. I thought you were around here back then Bryan? Anyway ... hope that explains it!

Personally, coming off of such a physical and disciplined gig like Journey, the Petty stuff was incredibly fun and liberating.

I loved playing guitar live, and I'm just a huge fan of the Petty songbook, and the Petty fans loved it.

I wouldn't say it was easier or harder to book gigs for The Waiting than Frontiers. You have to understand, when we started booking Frontiers back in 2002, a Journey tribute band was not a popular idea. Many promoters and venues just flat out weren't interested.

When I started booking The Waiting, we had a lot of people willing to bring us into their venue just based on the reputation and my personal relationships built as Frontiers. The one pushback that was kind of weird with Petty is that there was more pressure to dress in costumes from some venues – like they didn't so much appreciate the songbook as much as thought it would be cool and funny to have a band with a guy in a giant top hat and blonde wig, which we weren't doing.

The Waiting just went on unofficial hiatus not because the interest wasn't there but because we couldn't maintain a solid lineup. Unlike Frontiers, it was a part time gig and some of our lineup had main gigs that took precedence when it came to booking, others had full time jobs and family commitments, and it was hard to find and keep keyboard players.

So really, once a big festival or major venue like House of Blues calls and you have to turn them down once, you kind of get the benefit of the doubt – when you have to turn them down two or three times in a row because of availability, they pretty much stop calling LOL ...
