Quoting Neal, they really did "tour to death".
Saint Paul Theater? Live there and never heard of it.
How Perry's voice held up to that is insane.
It's also amazing the demand was so high for a band that had 1 top 20 hit at the time.
The Aragon's 5 night span. Pretty impressive cause it holds 4500 people.
Of course 2 years later, with a a string of hits they were playing stadiums.

It makes you wonder how Steve did it during those days. But it's no surprise how it ended. These guys went balls out in the day and left nothing in reserve when they got a bit older. Kudo's to them for kicking ass and putting their shite on the line every night. Well done Steve Perry. And Brad Delp and Lou Gramm.

Be greatful that Kelly Keagy and Jack Blades can still do it as good as the glory days.

Neal definitely likes to put the singers through the wringer. They weren't exactly easy on Steve Augeri in his early days with the band, either.

5 nights In a row at the Aragon ballroom is just plain stupid.
The max capacity is only 4500 why wouldn't you book the Chicago stadium which holds 18,000

I don't think you can blame this schedule on Neal. I would think more Herbie and Columbia. Also, I would bet, especially with how things have ended up, that Steve had some steroidal help. Back then, it wasn't yet known what damage it could do longterm. I'm sure a lot of singers did this to keep up with the pace, in fact I know they did. I don't know this for sure, but I would guess that played a part with SP. He was also much younger and the bounceback's a lot better, especially if you're using your voice correctly in the first place, which he was. It was later that he changed his approach (either due to his pipes getting more ragged on him or for stylistic purposes - whichever you wanna believe [and I know which I believe]) and I think steroids were also part of that time. Look at his body difference between Escape and Frontiers and from Frontiers to Street Talk. Could be wrong, but it'd explain a lot. One more thing, were those headlining dates, or were they still an opener? If so, that'd be a bit easier for Steve as the shows were shorter. The first tour I saw was Departure and they were headliners on that tour. Not sure about tours prior.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

The steroids Perry had injected into his voice (I believe he called them "vitamin B" :? ) would have prevented muscle breakdown and enhanced recovery. Beneficial while the taking it, but the effect backfires when one stops taking it.

It's likely Perry suffered some sort of vocal issue as a result of the steroid injections..

Remember that rock was big back then and didn't follow Top 20 lists. Rock Radio played Wheel in the Sky, Lights, Feeling That Way/Anytime, Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'/City of Angels, and Just The Same Way. You bet people wanted to go to Journey Concerts! :D

Is that legit? 30 straight nights of performances from May 11th through June 10th?

If so damn.
