Steve Perry's Fear

Postby FamilyMan » Fri Aug 14, 2015 4:54 am

Was reading an article/interview with Perry from '11 where he was supposedly "prepping" that infamous solo record that never was. He talked about how hard he is on himself and doesn't want to feel the pressure of making anything other than a great record. "Own worst critic", etc... And I'm wondering -- when did all this self-doubt and fear creep into this man's personality? Here was a guy who fronted a band that released 7 albums in 9 years; toured incessantly; and managed to make a solo record in between. He was on a Phil Collins-esque tear there for a while from the standpoint of profile. When did he become so frightened of failure that he came to live entirely off the musical grid? I totally get wanting to retire, not tour, have a life. But if he's got songs recorded, I don't understand the reluctance to put them out. Unless it's a vocal issue and he knows it's sub par.

With the technology and what they can do in the studio, I am sure his voice would sound fine. By the way, 50% Perry is better than no Perry. :D

Good post, Family Man. Journey's rigorous touring schedule would make any singer think twice about getting back into the game. That said, if Perry is motivated by a love of music, certainly he could release a track on ITunes without any pressure. For now, he seems content to dabble in the industry and make surprise guest appearances on other artists's albums.

When you have been the very best at what you do, it's hard to settle for less. Just take a look at Tiger Woods. I'm sure he hates people saying "he used to be so good". Accepting his new limitations is what keeps SP from releasing anything, IMHO. But for us fans, it is true.....half of what he was is still fine with us.

Don't be afraid, Steve Perry!

I understand if you don't want to get back with Journey. Too many egos or whatever.

But you should record a new album and do a tour. It doesn't have to be a big tour.

If you don't sound like 1978 Perry, your fans will understand. We just want to see you one more time. :D

..or maybe he just LIKES being a private person now...

I doubt that's what it is. In multiple interviews, he's talked about the solo tunes and his worry that they don't measure up ... how he's his own worst critic... I know he values his privacy, but when it comes to the music it sound more like vanity.

Yeah! People are so hung up on whether on not he can seen Mother Father in the original key.

I'd love if he's sing something.

I loved when he did this!

Steve's faithful fans will love anything he decides to do, but sad to say there are a lotta of party-poopers that relish every opportunity to knock the man down a notch. Not referring to the people here, it's all the trolls on yt ...been going on like that for years. Never seen such polarizing comments for 1 artist, ever. I know Steve says he never pays attention to anything written about him, but sometimes, you wonder whether that plays a part in his "Fear."
