First Single "Anywhere You Want To Go" to be released February 5, 2016

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- April 15, 2016 marks the release date of Santana IV, the wildly anticipated studio album that reunites the revered early '70s lineup of guitar icon Carlos Santana (guitar, vocals), Gregg Rolie (keyboards, lead vocals), Neal Schon (guitar, vocals), Michael Carabello (percussion) and Michael Shrieve (drums). The album signifies the first time in 45 years – since 1971's multi-platinum classic Santana III – that the quintet has recorded together

Santana IV features 16 all-new tracks written and produced by the band that burst with the same unparalleled energy and superlative musicianship that made Santana a pioneering force in world music and a household name across the globe. Joining the core Santana IV band in the studio are current Santana members Karl Perazzo (percussion) and Benny Rietveld (bass), with the legendary vocalist Ronald Isley guesting on two cuts.

The origins for the reunion go back several years, when Schon suggested that he and Carlos Santana record together. Santana liked the idea but went one better, proposing that they recruit Rolie, Shrieve and Carabello for what would be called Santana IV. After initial writing sessions and rehearsals took place in 2013, the group recorded throughout 2014 and 2015, amassing 16 spellbinding tracks that combined all their signature elements – Afro-Latin rhythms, soaring vocals, electrifying blues-psychedelic guitar solos, and irrepressibly jubilant percussion work – with widescreen hooks and melodies that will lodge themselves in the thicket of listeners' senses and stay there.

"It was magical," Santana says. "We didn't have to try to force the vibe – it was immense. From there, we then needed to come up with a balance of songs and jams that people would immediately identify as Santana."

The band's signature sound arrives forcefully on the album opener "Yambu," a righteously gritty and soulful stomper teeming with swirling B3 organ hooks and walloping guitar crunch.

The first single, "Anywhere You Want to Go," is destined to storm the pantheon of Santana classics. Written by Gregg Rolie, it's a sexy, body-shaking winner and an unmistakable tip of the hat to the inescapable cha-cha/Latin jazz charms of "Oye Como Va."

Ronald Isley (The Isley Brothers) is a special guest on two tracks. His vocals highlight the feverishly impassioned Latin-rock workout "Love Makes the World Go Round" and the hard-edged and funky "Freedom in Your Mind." Guitar fans expecting fireworks from Santana and Schon will cherish Santana IV from front to back. "All Aboard" is a no-holds-barred guitar jam of the highest order, as is the slinky, soulful metal cruncher "Caminando," which explodes with tectonic axe force. And on the unabashedly British blues-tinged "Shake It," the two go toe to toe on not one but two extended solo runs that will have lovers of unhinged fretboard work rejoicing.

"Carlos and I feel more connected than ever," says Schon. "We get super-aggressive when we play, but also melodic and poetic. We have an incredible dialog with each other on our guitars."

Santana's recurring themes of love and tolerance are common threads throughout Santana IV, most dramatically on the epic tone poem album closer "Forgiveness," a languid and breathtakingly gorgeous atmospheric groover.

Music fans familiar with the "roaring lion" artwork on Santana's 1969 debut album will instantly greet Heather Griffin-Vine's graphic for Santana IV as a gloriously realized update of that iconic image. "I really think the music goes along with the cover, and vice versa," says Santana. "It all fits together beautifully."

Few bands can pick up a musical dialog after 45 years apart, but on Santana IV each band member reaches a new level of virtuosity and communal intuition on a collection of songs that easily stands side-by-side with the group's treasured early work.

"When you can go back and break new ground with joy and determination – and some whoop-ass energy – it gets you going," says Santana. "I think we achieved something very rare. This music was screaming to come out of us. It wasn't about nostalgia. It was about passion."

Santana IV will be released on April 15, 2016, on Santana IV Records and is distributed by Thirty Tigers/RED Distribution. It will be available for pre-order on Amazon. For the CD click here, and for the LP click here. The album will be CD, Double 180 Gram Vinyl with Download Card and Digital configurations.

As a special offer for fans attending select shows on Santana's upcoming Luminosity tour, a CD copy of SANTANA IV is included with every pair of tickets. This offer will be redeemed via a promo code at MusicRedemptions.com.

I can't wait for the new album. I expect to like the new one even more than the original Santana albums with Carlos, Gregg, Neal and the two Michael's on drums/percussion.

I can't imagine that any song on the album will really be Metal, however.

Wow, only three shows!!! Pretty cool Journey gets to play Madison Square Garden. I don't even think in the height of their career they ever played there.

True, though both Frontiers and Raised on Radio tours played Nassau Coliseum and Meadowlands arenas - which in those days were venues arguably just as large.

True. They played a fair share of NY dates during the Frontiers and ROR tours, including Buffalo Memorial Auditorium and Holleder Memorial Stadium in Rochester (20,000+ seater).

I couldn't believe it when I jumped online last night and was able to purchase great seats at MSG (one of the packages). At that point, I had only heard a local radio commercial announcing the concert and didn't even know if seats were on sale yet (announcement said Saturday). Nice surprise, indeed. I'm truly hoping it will be a memorable night. So happy that the boys are playing such a hallowed venue once again.

16 songs?

I still think albums should be ten songs. They should break this up into two albums. Take the ten best and release them now as one album. Then they only need four more songs with the other six for a second album.

A friend of mine always felt the way that you do.

I will take as many songs as they'll give me, providing it's a great band with great songs. To me, it's kind of inexcusable these days to only put 10 songs on an album. Part of the reason that they used to only put 10 songs on an album was because cassette tapes and 8-track tapes could only hold so much tape. Or records could only fit so many songs on them.
With CD's these days, they can easily fit 12 to 16 songs on an album. And if it's a great band with great songs, then I do want 15 or 16 songs on an album.

I don't know about limiting to 10, but 16 does seem a lot. Especially if the layout and flow gets clunky. For example, Zac Brown's Jekyll & Hyde album has a lot of great music on it, but it tends to go on and on. I think there are 2 or 3, maybe 4 songs that could have been pulled and the album could have been a better overall package.

later~

Quality and quantity are not mutually exclusive though. What if its all great? You want them to keep half of them away from you because of some strange dogma of ten songs to an album? Not me!

Take the worst 2-4 ballads of Arrival and its a much better album. That doesn't make the good songs better....it just gives fewer people fewer reasons to dislike something.

I don't know what kind of "Santana" you were expecting. If you were expecting something from 2000, like Supernatural, you will be disappointed. This is not that kind of an album and it harkens back to the early years, where Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie were in the band. This kind of original line up is what they were after, when they recorded the album. They pulled those members together and have produced a work of art, the thing that those of us who grew up in the era want to hear. It's been 45 years and they have recaptured that sound. I'm loving it. Santana IV will be Grammy bound. The song has a familiar groove.

The version recently streamed on iHeartRadio must be some sort of 'radio edit' at 3:50. A longer version was just uploaded to YouTube that comes in over 5 minutes long:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv2EjN2PkhA

I know Gregg has been playing this song for awhile, but, aside from Carlos' creepy spoken intro, this version could have been recorded in 1971. Neal reprises his role as the rhythm guitarist while Carlos solos freely in the space left between Gregg Rolie's singing.

It really shows the original chemistry of the band. It's great to hear Carlos & Neal trading off solos again. For a couple of decades, I assumed Carlos played the haunting, wah-laden solos on Santana III, including Toussaint L'Overture and Jungle Strut. I wonder how many others thought similarly. Interesting, Carlos is the one wielding the wah in this song, which was such a key element of Schon's sound back then.

In addition to this relatively approachable song, I hope we get lots more fiery, long-form interplay between Gregg, Carlos in Neal on Santana IV.

That only works if you have 12-16 really good songs at one time. This rarely happens with normal rock bands. And it weakens the impact of the actual great songs if there's a filler track between most of them. I think the restrictions of the vinyl format actually did a lot of bands an unintentional favor. I mean, even Hysteria had 3-4 tracks on side 2 which really weren't that great, and few people would miss if they had been b-sides or something.

Especially now that CD's no longer really matter, it's so easy to release music digitally that you can make a killer 40-minute album, and then have a separate release of leftover tracks for the hardcore fans without diluting the listening experience.

I'll be curious to hear whatever the reunited Santana puts out, but I guarantee there won't be more than 10 really necessary tracks here. Those first three albums were so great in part because they only had 40 minutes to work with, so they made it count.

For many, Hysteria had a lot more than just 3-4 tracks that "really weren't that great". It's all comes down to personal taste.

I'm just picking an overlong album I presumed most people here would be familiar with. Aside from "Gods Of War," the quality dropoff from the (numerous) singles to the 4 other tracks was significant. (Honestly, I'd say the same thing about Frontiers. Come at me. )
