The Place in Your Heart

So far on this tour, Journey's sound crew has been taking the unorthodox step of playing Journey tracks on the PA system - both during the set change between acts, as well as immediately after the show as load out begins. After the MSG show, they played the Arnel version of "The Place in Your Heart." I was pleasantly surprised to rediscover this overlooked gem from Generations.

Made me wonder which version those of you on this forum prefer. I think I have to side with the Arnel version for production value and overall band performance. Though I think the Augeri version has a better arrangement - particularly with the guitar interlude that follows the first chorus, but is curiously missing from Arnel's. Thoughts?

Probably my favorite and few songs I liked on Generations. Augeri's version has more grit.
Thought it was silly to rerecord 2 of Generations songs on the next CD. Arnels version is okay however.
He stepped up his game for Eclipse.

I like both versions. I prefer the arrangement and production on the Shirley version. They should not have recorded Generations without his involvement.

Prefer the Augeri version of this and Faith in the Heartland. I'm glad they've continued to play the latter. Criminally underrated.

I think that they would do well to keep including this one and add Higer Place and Remember Me. All 3 are in the same vein as the Frontiers era (SW, ATL, OTY) in my opinion. Good songs that would have fit that era.

Prefer the arrangement of the Augeri version. Especially Neal's guitar. The Arnel version sounds sort of "flat" in terms of production.

Urgent melody and structure and a VERY aggressive, crisp, resonant Augeri vocal. Terrific drums by Castronovo, too.
To me this is Schon/Cain at its finest.

I've always preferred Kevin Elson's producing better than Kevin Shirley's.

Time to get your ears checked. There's a reason Cain/Schon had two of the Generations tracks re-recorded. Elson's work on Generations is straight-up amateur hour...sounds like it was recorded in a tin can.

Sort of agree with you both. I think the Place in Your Heart version here is outstanding. The reverb or whatever is similar to SW in sound. Faith in the Heartland has potential, but the song is still weak in some parts, regardless of production.

The rest of the album really isn't very good in terms of song writing, choice of singers, and too many other factors to mention. It makes it difficult for me to separate out mixing, etc. when the other issues override.
