Last night was Detroit's show (Clarkston), and it was awesome. I was sitting right in the middle and looking directly at Steve Smith. Neal must read the message boards because he took every opportunity to rock. He was NOT ashamed this time. He started the concert with a solo. He did Star Spangled Banner solo. He did a lot more solos all through the show. Jon did his melody on the piano. Steve Smith did his drum solo that really got the place fired up.

Dave Mason was really good. It was really hot yesterday with the sun beating down on us. But when Dave played We Just Disagree a cloud moved in front of the sun and cooled things down. What are the odds that would happen just for that song?

The Doobie Brothers were killing it up there. China Grove has one of the best riffs ever. It is so good I stole it for one of my songs. There were only SEVEN people in the band, but there were EIGHT people taking bows at the end of their set. I think I am in the twilight zone.

Journey did the following songs (Not in this order): Don't Stop Believin', Stone In Love, Who's Cryin' Now, Escape, Open Arms, Lights, La Do Da, Wheel In The Sky, Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin', Any Way You Want It, Only The Young, Separate Ways, Faithfully, Be Good To Yourself.

At end of show, they played a recording of Arnel's version of Place in Your Heart. The band should have just performed that song at the end of the show for a second encore.

Anyway, besides the heat which made things very uncomfortable, but that is not the bands' fault, the show was awesome!!!

Was the recording of PIYH just playing as people were leaving and the band was off the stage? Is this new?

Not new. They did the same thing at the end of the irvine show. And yes, playing as people were leaving. Band was already off stage and the lights were up.

INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP -- There was no escaping the melting heat on Thursday, Aug. 4, but that didn’t seem to matter to a sold-out audience that faithfully packed the seats and every inch of the lawn for Journey’s concert at the DTE Energy Music Theatre. When the lights went down and the familiar, surging synthesizer opening of “Separate Ways” rang out, the crowd was on its feet and stayed there for the majority of the hit-packed 90-minute set.

There are certain songs that one expects to hear from Journey, and the touring powerhouse did not disappoint. The quintet immediately went on to fan favorites “Be Good To Yourself,” “Only The Young,” “Stone In Love” and “Any Way You Want It,” sounding like the practiced, veteran musicians they are. Founding members Neal Schon (guitar) and Ross Valory (bass), along with long-time member Jonathan Cain (keyboard, guitar, vocals) and returning alumnus Steve Smith (drums) put on dazzling displays of musicianship throughout the show.

The only exception early on was lead singer Arnel Pineda; Despite being his usual leaping, frenetic self on stage, Pineda started out sounding a bit tired and missing a few notes. The Filipino singer, who has fronted the band since 2008, shortly after Schon discovered him on YouTube, normally draws huge praise for his uncanny ability to deliver almost exact recreations of the hits originally sung by Steve Perry. But if Pineda was slightly off, vocally, his stage presence and energy were off the charts. He bounded from one side to the other, executing his signature jump/kick combo moves enough times to make Tony Hawk proud.

And expending so much energy -- he sweated his way through three shirt changes -- only seemed to improve Pineda’s voice, and after popping off stage during Schon’s blistering guitar solo, Pineda soared and was noticeably stronger the rest of the night.

Schon and the rest of the band demonstrated time and again why Journey has sold close to 90 million records worldwide since its self-titled debut album in 1975. Schon’s solo segment , full of complicated riffs, ended with an impassioned cover of “The Star Spangled Banner” and reminded the crowd that the man is sometimes a seriously underrated guitarist. Cain also tore it up on the keyboards; His solo, leading into “Open Arms,” showcased amazing skill as his fingers danced over the keys, teasing just enough notes of familiar songs to be recognizable before noodling off to the next ones.

If Schon and Cain were impressive, what Smith did during his drum solo almost defies explanation. In what was by far the most well-received musical solo of the night, Smith showed off what a Berklee College of Music education looks like behind a drum kit. He tossed sticks and changed grips so quickly that he was at times a blur of sound and motion.

Smith was also the most visually representative of the Bay Area (the tour being billed as San Francisco Fest 2016) in a psychedelic colored shirt that could have been purchased new in the ’60s Haight-Ashbury and a pair of Levis.

British native Dave Mason opened the show, not really fitting the Bay Area geographic requirements but delivering plenty of familiar tunes in his 30 minutes, including Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and his own “We Just Disagree,” displaying guitar work and vocals as strong as they were during his Traffic youth.

A tight 75-minute set by Journey’s northern California brethren the Doobie Brothers followed, filled with enduring rock anthems and vocal harmonies, with the line in “Black Water” adjusted to “Michigan moon won’t you keep shining on me” amidst favorites such as “Rockin’ Down The Highway,” “Takin’ It To The Streets” and “China Grove”

Doobies drummer Tony Pia, a Detroit native, proudly sported a Detroit Rock City T-shirt, and Schon prefaced Journey’s hit “Lights” by taking the crowd “back in time to Cobo Hall for the ‘Infinity’ album before asking fans to take their cell phones out and “light up the place like a Christmas tree” during the song. But the most fun and surprising story came from Journey bassist Valory as he waxed nostalgic about this being the 35th Anniversary of the group’s landmark album “Escape” going to No. 1 the same week Journey played three shows at Pine Knob -- which he said “will always be Pine Knob.”

That was the week he also “met and eventually married a girl from Redford Township” -- all the more reason for the crowd to be in a “Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’ mood at the end of the night. As Pineda led like a conductor from the stage for “Don’t Stop Believin’,” fans came together a bit north of Detroit to listen to the music, arms up, swaying side to side, and in that moment nobody stopped believing they were actually born and raised in (the non-existent) South Detroit.

Why do people have to harp on South Detroit not existing? Do I have to go through all the songs with places that don't exist?There is a non-existent Stairway to Heaven. This is so childish.
