Journey & Asia 2017 Tour Dates

Asia will be touring with Journey in 2017! John, Geoff, Carl and Sam are excited to see you on the road.
“Asia is honoured to be asked to share the stage with Journey,” says ASIA’s lead singer and bassist John Wetton, who has been fighting cancer since 2015 after the band finished its last US tour. “On a personal note, this couldn’t have come at a better time for me; I remain determined and my road to a full recovery continues. I look forward to seeing everyone on the tour next year”.

Interesting choice for an opening act. Would have never thought of Asia.

Actually I think musically the pairing should work good. However, I did see a DVD of Asia from a while back (Howe was in band) and something wasn't quite right with the live sound of the band. The songs just didn't seem to have the same sound/feel and I at the time seemed to think it was mostly because of Howe. Hard to explain :? . It wasn't horrible, but just kind of blah.

Howe was the weak link when I saw them for sure. His choppy weird style/playing has gotten odder as he's aged. Still works ok in Yes, doesn't fit in with Asia's AOR sound at all. Thankfully, Howe left the band, so there's a new young guy on guitar that kills it.

The recent Asia live DVDs are pretty poor quality, so don't judge their live chops by how those sound.

sounds pretty good to me, but why (I assume Geoff Downes) faces backwards?

I have seen clips from several of the DVDs and the quality is so poor that I am surprised that they were even put out. I understand wanting to share the music, but if the quality of the video/audio is poor leave it on the cutting room floor.

1:15. Oooops.

(I'm a fan of the band, but if you're going to entirely can your backing vocals, at least get them synced up. Seems like they picked up the tempos a bit since Howe left, but didn't update the backing tapes)

Journey needs to get Steve Augeri back in the band, and keep Arnel also. Then they can tour alone and do a three-hour show! They can include all the hits, and then do much more such as deep tracks from classic albums, and material from Arrival, Eclipse and so on. Just sayin'

Why not add Robert Fleischman into the mix as well? Then it could be a three-hour and 15 minute show.

I say Add Chalfant and go for the full Springsteen length show. What's that other guy that claims he was in Journey? Add him too. :)

Actually, the Augeri-Arnel thing is not a bad idea.

He has faced completely backwards at times (1982 Asia in Asia show). Not sure what that is about, other than perhaps he stacks keyboards so high that he can't see over them facing forward.

I guess I don't understand why Asia is opening. They aren't much of a draw at all. Will having Asia on the bill really make a difference with attendance? The venues on this tour are smaller than what Journey usually does on their big summer tours. I feel like Journey could've been the only act on the bill.

I doubt I would pay to see Asia alone, so this seems like a good deal for them. Journey has toured with most of their contemporaries over the past decade or so, who else should they share the bill with?

Thats not the point I am trying to make. For this particular run of shows Journey doesn't need an opening act- at all. They are playing in b level markets, the venues are generally a couple thousand smaller than what they usually play on their big summer tours, (Not knocking Journey at all. Every artist at some point plays in the b markets) they just don't need an opening act this go around. Its certainly not the worst thing in the world, Journey will (hopefully) play a longer set with only one opening act. Journey could've played even longer if there wasn't an opening act. Given the markets they are playing in, and that Asia isn't a draw at all anymore, I just think Journey doesn't benefit from having an opening act this go around.

ASIA's JOHN WETTON To Sit Out JOURNEY Dates, 'Cruise To The Edge' Appearance

January 11, 2017

http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/asia-j ... ppearance/

John Wetton will sit out ASIA's previously announced shows with JOURNEY to focus on his ongoing battle with cancer. He will be temporarily replaced by YES's Billy Sherwood for the March and April dates, which include an appearance on the Cruise To The Edge progressive rock cruise.

"I am disappointed to announce that, on the advice of my medical team, I have to withdraw from Cruise To The Edge, and from the first leg of the JOURNEY tour, March 15 – April 4," Wetton — who who has been fighting cancer since 2015 — said in a statement.

"I will soon be starting a new medical chemotherapy procedure, under which I will not be able to fly.

"I am grateful to the promoters of the cruise. I wish them pleasant sailing and I know my friends on the cruise, both artists and fans, will have a ball on the ocean wave, I will be with you all in spirit.

"My good friend Billy Sherwood will fill in for me within ASIA, keeping my seat warm during the initial 12 JOURNEY dates.

"While I am naturally disappointed to miss the beginning of what I know will be an historic ASIA tour, I am intending to return to the stage with ASIA later in 2017, dates soon to be announced.

"I know this decision will be in the best interests of my health and our fans, in the long run."

As a lead singer, bassist and songwriter, John Wetton initially rose to fame with KING CRIMSON and after that Wetton co-founded UK. In the early 1980s, he was the frontman of the super-group ASIA, his biggest commercial success. ASIA's self-titled debut album was the biggest selling album in the world in 1982.

He later formed the duo ICON with Geoff Downes (YES and THE BUGGLES) and has had a successful solo career releasing a large number of studio and live albums, including the compilation "The Studio Recordings Anthology".

Damn, that's brutal. I had no idea Wetton had cancer. He already had triple bypass surgery about 10 or 11 years ago. Tough life for him...

I know that some of it is just age. Life catches up with us. The hard living of a rock star that some of these guys lived can't have helped, though.

I am just glad that these guys got to reunite, make a couple albums and tour. Asia and Alpha are two great albums.

I hope he recovers soon, and when he does, and Journey/Asia are playing anywhere near Im there.
I wanna hear him sing one of my top 10 songs I never get sick of, Only time will tell and I wanna hear troubled child live.

I get the concept for sure, but man, ending the show with Troubled Child, Backtalk, Frontiers and Rubicon is going to KILL the audience. Wow.
