b]Steve Perry to start residence in Vegas starting this June[/b]

By Gary Graff (Detroit Free Press)

Citing he doesn't want to tour from city to city anymore, Steve Perry, the legendary lead singer of 1970's rock group Journey, has decided to set up a residence in Vegas which will run from June to August. First, he will release his new album in May which will give him plenty of fresh material to add to the classic hits from Journey's heyday. I interviewed Perry over Skype and he told me, "I am an old man now. I can't be flying from town to town for concerts anymore, but I have a huge desire in my soul to get out there in front of the people. You know the fans are the whole reason for all my success. I love them, man."

The news gets even better. During his three-month residence in Sin City, Steve Perry promises to have many special guests. I asked him directly if Neal Schon could be a guest, and he didn't deny it. Steve Perry laughed, "I would love to have him by my side again even if for only one show, but he is busy with Journey this summer. But mostly, I have secured some talented people that fans will know that can add something to my shows. It will be fun to perform with all of them and make this a second summer of luv, so to speak."

In all the decades that I have covered rock music, I have never seen any rock star be so happy and humble at the same time. Perry is excited about giving back to the fans one more time. I would be amiss if I didn't ask him about the new album. Steve Perry told me, "You know there is a R & B flavor to the whole thing, but you might be surprised from some of the rockers. I really reached back to side B of Frontiers and was inspired to write a few songs of that nature."

Steve Perry continued by telling me, "There is a big movie coming out this summer that one of my new songs will be featured in. I don't want to brag, but I think it will be a big hit because of that."

Being the professional I am, I asked Perry when all of this was worked out. Steve Perry answered, "You'd think it would have taken me months to plan this all out and get it all together, but it didn't. Last Sunday, I did everything. I recorded the new album in one day last Sunday. It was a very special day for me. Last Sunday, I got the biggest and best rock talent in the world on the phone and persuaded them to agree to visit me in Vegas this Summer for a couple shows each. Last Sunday, I did this all." Then I thought to myself. Wait a minute. Last Sunday was April 1st. APRIL FOOLS! (Sorry. This HAD to be done.)

Well, that is some big news! I hope it's true. We've heard a lot of things before. Maybe there were songs in his sock drawer.

I can't believe I fell for that, hook, line and sinker.

1. The residency- that made sense to me, especially at this point in Steve's life.
2. The album has been talked about for a long time, so maybe it really could be time and happening.
3. Song in a big summer movie. Yep, that could make sense, if 1&2 happened.

I failed to read the last sentence, feeling optimistic that something new was gonna come from SP.

This should have been posted downstairs, but maybe not. It would have sent the loons into orbit, then crashing back to earth, when they figured out it was a belated April fools joke. Well played!

Oh my goodness, that is not funny. Although I have had scenarios in my head working out a story where Mr Perry saves the world and saves the heroine from the tower. I have never been the heroine nor the pony he rode back into town on; I was in the audience as one of the town’s occupants cheering from the crowd. And I always wake up! There is so much more that can be taken from that brief summation I am already exhausted.

How cruel and heartless can you be? You know how we loons are. I was already counting my PTO and trying to decide between the Bellagio & Mandelay Bay. Shoulda known better when he said he just whipped it all together in one day, including recording the album

Good one.

Not fooled. Figured it out in two seconds. Might as well say Blackmore is back with Purple doing a residence in Vegas. Never gonna ever.

Been saying for years now that a Vegas Garth Brooks type of thing is exactly what Perry should do. A couple of days a week, and he can chill the rest of the time.

Exactly. It would make sense. Perry could have big guest stars like Eric Clapton or Elton John for one show each. It would be huge. If it really happened, I might have to move to Vegas so I could see every show!

Except one problem. He cant sing the old hits they way MOST people (not loons) would want to hear them
not even for one night much less multiple times a week. the karaoke style Eels performances wont cut it.

If SP had any interest in recording, we would have heard something by now. Look at Augeri - voice somewhat damaged - but still releasing a new single every few months. And they're pretty good too. He doesn't do it for money. He does it because music is in his soul.

I think he would like to do something like that as well. I would bet if he could release some new songs
And just be able to perform those without people expecting his dirty dozen version he would love that.
I totally respect him for NOT doing injustice to his legacy. He had some fun with the Eels and it was fun
Seeing him have a good time, and I would love to hear some new songs that he would sound great on.

The only thing is that every time Perry gets some attention he talks about having these new songs and putting something out. It's okay dude...if you don't want to perform that's fine, it's your life. But stop saying there's stuff there when there's not...

I’m thinking if people quit asking, then he’d not answer the question. He knows what is going to be asked and what’s expected...yeah i’m working on an album, it’s almost done...got a couple of tracks left..because that’s what people want to hear. It’s nice getting the attention but the truth is...nah, not very much. I’m living my life. People think he’d be boring if he said he’s just enjoying life at his home with his lady, couple of dogs and an adventurous cat who shows up every couple of weeks to visit and say hi. Goodness, he’s a legend, someone did say that and being a legend at this point in life you can say that. Music is fun but not at the top of the list every single day of his life. I might be wrong and I have been, but keep asking and he’ll keep telling you, yeah, still working on that music.

I thought the rumor was Steve Perry wrote 50 new songs, and he was recording a new album that would include two Beatles' covers. That seems concrete to me, and not some pie in the sky thing! He must not be releasing it because he won't make any money from it and he is a perfectionist and doesn't want to release it for that reason, too. I like the other thing somebody mentioned. Perry probably doesn't want to tour and have to do the dirty dozen every night. He has dozens of other songs he would rather do. That sounds right. So, now we know why Perry won't release a new album and won't tour. It isn't because his voice is toast. They can clean that up with computers even if it was. He has other good reasons not to do either.

First in the BTM Episode he said he was really thinking about touring.
Sometime in the mid 2000's he said he owned StevePerry.com and was going to put info on it.
Later he said he was sketching stuff to write an autobiography.
Then the 50 new songs interview.
There was all this buzz about musicians saying they were in the studio with him.
Then after the RNR HOF he said he was finalizing a new record.

To this day I truly believe being the perfectionist he is, he does not want to create something to fail.
When he did the solo releases When youre in love and I Stand Alone and they got little to no attention.

I hope we hear him sing again, live or on a record, but after the 2016 interview when he said he was in the studio for months and he would be releasing something the next spring I cant get excited at all.
This is why this April Fools Joke from the first word did not get me.
