How’s that for an 80’s flashback? We have Steve Perry and Journey not only singing a couple of songs LIVE, but also being interviewed on The Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder! The only thing more 80’s than that would be Playing Pac-Man while listening to A-Ha on a Sony Walkman while wearing a Frankie Goes to Hollywood “Relax” shirt.

First, let’s start with Mr. Snyder and his show: At that time, NBC had The Today Show, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and so what better way to follow that than with The Tomorrow Show (and later Tomorrow Coast to Coast). Tom Snyder, the host, was known for his direct interviewing style as well as his hearty laugh, full head of silver hair and the constant cigarette in his hand. (If you don’t believe me, check out Dan Aykroyd’s SNL parody of him from the late 70’s.) Those who stayed up late to watch the show were never quite sure who would be on or what odd questions Snyder might ask them …. which made for great late night TV.

Now, over to Journey. The band was formed in San Francisco in 1973, and featured members of Santana and something called Frumious Bandersnatch. Journey had its biggest commercial success between 1978 and 1987 when it released a series of hit songs, including 1981’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” which in 2009 became the top-selling track in iTunes history among songs not released in the 21st century. It was released off the band’s eighth–and most successful–album, Escape, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and produced most of their most popular singles, including “Open Arms”. All told, Journey has two Gold albums, eight multi-platinum albums, and two diamond albums (including seven consecutive multi-platinum albums between 1978 and 1987) and eighteen Top 40 singles in the U.S. (the second most behind the Electric Light Orchestra with 20), six of which reached the Top 10 of the US chart and two of which reached No. 1 on other Billboard charts!

“Don’t Stop Believin'” was released on June 3, 1981 and eventually hit number 9 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 on its original release. “Who’s Crying Now” was released in 1981 as the first single from Escape and reached #4 on both the Billboard Hot 100.

So here they are LIVE on the Tomorrow Show in 1981 (the video has a little glitch at the beginning, which those of you who owned VHS tape recorders will recognize) Steve Perry, Ross Valory, Jonathan Cain, Neal Schon, and Steve Smith.

The first time I ever saw The Tubes was on the Tomorrow Show, sometime around then as well. They were promoting The Completion Backward Principle album. They were dressed in suits and ties and played Sushi Girl and something else. Probably on YouTube but I haven't looked for it.

Is that why, as someone on here once called it, the "Perry Chorus" of background vocals on ROR was used? I thought Neal had a decent voice. Perhaps because they punted Ross they needed more than just SP and Neal.

What "events of the day" made them change their program to something " more suitable"? Anyone remember?

And what was that instrument at the 1:51 mark? First time I hear that.

Absolutely love the raw trashy sounding Les Paul on DSB. Although NS has always played far above & beyond, I miss that edgy crunch from back then. I think he recaptured some of that sound at the Belgium Graspop Fest once, and I think he was playing a Les Paul that show too.

I believe there was a shooting that day (Reagan's shooting, maybe?). Not sure which song would have been played otherwise, though.

This has to be late 1981 or early 1982 which was after Reagan shooting.
Stones tour was from Sep-Dec in 81 in America.
instrument at 1:51 has to be Neal's guitar.

Anwar Sadat was assassinated on October 6th. That could be it.

It made me corious so i checked a litle bit. the show aired on October 7, 1981 in the morning, the main headline in the news on that day was about the assassination of Egypt's President Anwar Sadat that happened the day before. It might be related. I think they weren't supposed to sing "Don't Stop Belivin'" or maybe they needed to create a shorter version of it.

Yes. They were supposed to play WCN and Dead Or Alive. They scrapped DOA because of the assassination of Anwar Sadat and opted for a shortened version of DSB. I could never stand Tom Snyder and this segment just reinforced that. When he was interviewing SP, RS & JC and asked the question about letting past members go, he was looking right at SP, who started to answer, and then he cut him off mid-sentence. I remember when I was watching that when it aired, I wanted to smack him. Rude prick.

Sad circumstances that they had to change the song, but give them many credits for doing so.
Was cool they would do a deep cut, like they did Where were you on "Fridays".
Looked up DSB release date and it was Oct 6th 81. Would have been the song to promote Escape, but they originally wanted to play Dead or Alive.

Thanks for clarifying, Lora! And yes, I agree with you on Tom Snyder. Even in the interview that he did with Charlie Manson, he still came off as the a**hole in the room.

Looking back now, it was crazy how he asked Ross what he would do if they had to fire somebody. Five years later, Ross was fired. Real life is stranger than fiction. Why would he ask Ross this question? There are a million other questions he could have asked. It is strange that he would ask that exact question. And I would have loved to hear Steve Perry answer that question.
