Cheesy lyrics throughout both albums, but amazing guitar work by Schon, decent melodies. This band could have gone on if they did things a little better, and you know, didn't have the hatred between John and Jon.

There is an old Force interview where Jonathan talks about the end of BE. It wasn't just how the band wasn't getting along. The label was propping up John Waite. They were also putting the Diane Warren songs on the albums, forcing Jonathan to make deals to get his songs on there. I know "Ghost In Your Heart" was one of them. The second album went WAY over budget and that caused even more issues. Jonathan said they were all already successful and didn't need to be a "kiss ass corporate rock band", but that is what they became. What really broke up the band was Neal starting Hardline. That ended it. Hardline was announced before Backlash was released and it was known that BE had broken up...and that killed the album.

For BE to have gone on, they would need to find a label that would let them do their own thing. Also, John Waite would need to be more of a team player...instead of working with the label to try to be the rock star of the band. They would all need to start writing TOGETHER instead of each wanting to take the band in their own direction.

Plus, Waite was erasing guitar tracks that Schon was recording for the Backlash album.

I did one of my Cassette Chronicles articles on the Backlash album. I hadn't listened to it before but really liked it.

Such a shame that all the BS brought the band down.

I’ve always been a Journey and Babys fan, so I really enjoyed Bad English. Had the pleasure of seeing them at a small theater in Indianapolis, they really rocked.

Jonathan covers the Bad English era, including the band’s demise, in some detail in his book. Definitely some friction there. IIRC, a lot of it had to do with the choice of producer for Backlash. I actually preferred that album to the band’s inaugural offering, too bad it all ended there.

Ron Nevison produced Backlash. Ron Nevison is one of the best producers ever. Unfortunately when it came to Survivor, Heart, Bad English and any other radio friendly band that he produced he tended to take the band in too light of a direction. Backlash didn't Rock enough. Of course a lot of that is Waite's fault besides Nevison's.

I like The Baby's a lot. But I once read a comment from John Waite claiming that Journey never Rocked like The Baby's did. Journey songs like Edge Of The Blade, Dead Or Alive, Lay It Down, Where Were You, Line Of Fire, Chain Reaction, Backtalk and many others were way harder Rock than anything that The Baby's ever did. Waite is full of shit on a lot of what he says.

Not if you ask Robert plant - Jimmy Page - Ozzy Osborne - I could go on, he was there for some great
recordings no doubt about that .

I know, I almost named both Damn Yankees albums, and the fact that they Rock. Especially the first one.

I know that a lot of UFO fans are critical of Nevison's production quality too. But he's worked with a lot of legends and I love the production qualities of the albums that he's produced that I have, which is the Survivor, Bad English, Damn Yankees, Heart and several others as well.

If anyone's interested, here's an interview with Ron Nevison where he talks a little about Zeppelin and Ozzy, as well as many other bands that he produced. Unfortunately, he does not talk about Bad English in the interview. But he does talk about The Baby's, Damn Yankees, Survivor, Heart and many, many other bands that he has produced.
