Since a few of us were recently discussing which lineups would be accepted as being Journey and which wouldn't. And since the lineup that The Storm had on their first album was named as being accepted by some people as being Journey. I was thinking about different lineup possibilities, and I wanted to see which of the two following lineups any of you would prefer? I didn't want to just name The Storm's original lineup VS Journey's current lineup, so I changed the lineups to versions that have never existed.


So, which of these two lineups would you prefer as being "Journey?"

Lineup #1
Kevin Chalfant: Lead Vocals
Neal Schon: Guitar
Gregg Rolie: Keyboards, Lead Vocals
Randy Jackson: Bass
Michael "Narada" Walden: Drums


Lineup #2
Arnel Pineda: Lead Vocals
Josh Ramos: Guitar
Jonathan Cain: Keyboards
Ross Valory: Bass
Steve Smith: Drums

At this point in time, I'm all for the Schon/Rolie lineup that hasn't been seen in 40 years!! THAT would be something to experience, especially with Jackson and Walden. Kevin Chalfant would be cool to see finally get the official nod as well!!

It can't be Journey without Schon, but I am not a huge Chalfant guy. Still I'd choose #1.

#1 without question. Having said that, I do think back in his day, Cain was a superior writer. Not sure if he'll ever get that back.

Looks like a landslide for lineup #1. I want Gregg back and ya gotta have Neal!

Of the two lineups that I listed to choose from, my choice would also be lineup#1.
And I agree that you have to have Schon in the band for it to truly be Journey.

Lineup #1 for me. Gotta have Neal, although, I'd have put Deen in for Michael, & I loved Marco Mendoza on JTT. Yes, I know, no substitutes, but had to do it.

Which version of Kevin Chalfant are you getting? Chalfant in 2020 is nothing close to the Chalfant of the 1990s. His range has decreased with age in the past 30 years. Still a good singer, but what you'd get now would be tuned down. Not to current Perry levels, but down a bit.

LOL ... why these 2? A better topic would be ... make up your preferred lineup ...

I agree .. after 40+ yrs, it's not Journey without Neal Schon.
On the other hand, Kevin Chalfant ... good enough singer and all, but never cared for his voice, in his prime. Too "tinny" to my ears.
Arnel, you can pick on his diction ... but much better singer.

I somewhat explained why I listed those 2 lineups in my initial post in this thread.

I am NOT one who criticizes Arnel Pineda. I've said nothing but great things about him. But I like Kevin Chalfant's singing just as much as Pineda's.

And yes, I think that almost all of us agree that if Neal's not in Journey, it's not Journey.
