Arnel talks new album

Postby The_Noble_Cause » Tue Dec 15, 2020 3:01 pm

Blabbermouth transcribed parts of a recent Arnel interview.

Asked if the new JOURNEY album sees the band going in a new musical direction, Arnel said: "They're trying. But at the same time, they're trying to stay somewhat in the tradition, in the legacy. It's a 50-50 thing. I mean, it would be kind of boring if you keep on staying on the same path. Of course, we people, we get bored and we try to do something else, see if works. And then, if it works, then, 'Hey, let's do it more.' And then, when it's starting to get sour again, then maybe we should get back to the old style and let's just put a little twist and maybe the fans will like it again."

I'm curious to hear Cain's thoughts on the new album. He previously said he was only interested if the band moved back to the center, like Arrival.

In this interview with Mitch Lafon, Arnel talked about it being a different sound.

I'm fine with an album like Arrival. I think Arrival had a bit more heart to it then Revelation.

Arrival definitely had more outside writers. It also took more chances than Revelation. For every Arrival song that sounds like classic Journey (ex. To Be Alive Again), there was a song that tried to mix up the formula (ex. Live and Breathe) too. Arrival is a deserted island album for me, but I love Revelation and Eclipse also.

Oh yeah, I really like Revelation and Eclipse myself (Tantra is one of the greatest pieces of music they've ever done). There was moments of brilliance on those 2 albums, but Arrival to me really sounded like it was the last time they felt like they had something to prove. I'm really hoping for something special this time around.

I love Arrival, but it was too bogged down with ballads.
Just for fun, imagine this for the track listings.

1. Higher Place
2. Change For the Better
3. All the Way
4. Signs of Life
5. All the Things
6. Livin' to Do
7. World Gone Wild
8. I Got a Reason
9. With Your Love
10. Lifetime of Dreams
11. Live and Breathe
12. To Be Alive Again
13. Ritual
