David Spade comments on Journey

Postby JourneyHard » Fri Jan 29, 2021 10:54 am

David Spade was talking to Jerry Seinfeld. David Spade said when you go to Journey concert they have Don't Stop Believin', but the songs that come before that are crap. This might be true for 90% of other bands, but not for Journey. Journey is NOT a one-hit wonder. I knew there was a reason I never liked David Spade.

I think that I remember Spade having a line in an episode of one of his shows where he mentions "Open Arms?"
I can't remember if it was "Just Shoot Me" "8 Simple Rules" or some other show that he was on? But I think that the line was saying something good about "Open Arms?" I think that he said something about it being the best power ballad of all time or something like that?

Even if they didn't have DSB, the catalog of hits (AWYWI, Lights, WITS, SW) is vast. Spade's an idiot.

Spade should take a long hard look at his own catalog of work before he starts accusing others of one hit wonders.

That's not exactly what he said:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fjgHSetnrE

Go to the 8min mark.

"You go see Journey and they have Don't Stop Believin. But, you know, there's some dog shit before that. And, you realize that it's an hour and a half concert. It's not all...it's sorta like this (moves his finger up and down, showing there is highs and lows). But, you walk away happy, and you do have some filler."

And, in context, he IS comparing it to stand up and trying to put together a two hour show..and he's saying he's no different.

In other quotes, he says you don't take DSB away from Journey, because that is their show stopper.

In the end, he's really saying what many have whined about for years, that Journey needs to shake up their set with new songs. He basically agrees with most of you.

I don't think any of Journey material is crap. They could play anything from any Journey album and it would be excellent (except Castles Burning, but they haven't played that in concert in 20 years. Damn. I feel old. 20 years! Wow!) David Spade should have mentioned Kansas instead. "They have Carry On Wayward Son and what comes before it is crap." That I might agree with. But NOT Journey.

I agree with you JourneyHard. Or maybe, I don't understand where David Spade is coming from so his comment, seems off-handed, disjointed and...weird.

Thank you!

I think comparing a comedian's work to a rock band is like comparing apples and oranges. David Spade is out of line to try this. Nobody buys a comedy album and then goes to a comedy show expecting the same jokes on the album. It wouldn't make any sense. "Come on. Give me your best joke from the album! I heard it a million times, but I will laugh so hard when I hear it again!" That is crazy talk.

Next, David Spade will say, "Einstein had one hit with his Theory of Relativity, but the rest of his life's work was crap! And if you disagree with this, you are being too sensitive!"

Just because David Spade's life's work has been mostly crap, that doesn't mean he can crap on Journey's legacy.

Does anyone really view Spade as a stand-up? I know he does stand-up and has had a few specials, but to many, I think he is pigeon-holed as an SNL and sitcom has-been.

Anyone who refers to portions of Journey's live setlist as "dog shit" is most certainly NOT looking forward to new tunes.
