Having "too many ballads" may hurt the album, but it's not going to hurt the singles. Funny how the one big single was a ballad. Perhaps they needed MORE ballads! The problem with TBF was Steve Perry refusing to tour and being fired. The "problem" with Arrival was Sony expecting low sales (which Kevin Shirley even said) and not shipping to retail when they were sold out, and doing virtually NOTHING to promote the album. The Vegas DVD went PLATINUM...there was potential with Arrival, but Sony didn't care...they cared about TBF and the big pay day from that...and they didn't get it.
The past is LITTERED with horrible decisions from Journey management. Remember Me needed a big push with Armageddon even after it got pulled from the end credits. Journey did NOT need more ballads, they still had too many: On Arrival they rightfully added a few rockers but they should've still pulled a ballad or two....or at least tracked the album better. RED13 needed a real mix but it was Journey's best output for me. 4 different style songs showcasing their range. Still, re-releasing it with new cover art and NO promotional push was useless. Generations also needed a better mix, more teamwork writing, and more cohesive sound by not giving everyone a lead vocal. Giving it away with the tour ticket was fine but the album didn't sound finished yet.
And the band sent so many mixed messages: Steve sounds like "rock" but they load up with ballads. Journey wants to rock more so they drop Open Arms, then cave to audience. Journey wants to move forward and not be a nostalgia band but they don't support any new music (other than Higher Place) on most tours.
Back top ballads, they were the only songs that were ever going to chart well. All The Way did fair. As did After All These Years. Adult Contemporary was/is the only radio that will play new music from a classic band but it won't be rock.
