New Schon interviews

When asked about Steve Perry...
"We were very, very tight. We’re talking and getting to know each other again — though not trying to get together musically again, but he’s learning who I am now, through a portion of our business that I’m kind of controlling now. I’m talking about a Journey trademark that I’ve obtained, as we’ve never owned our own trademark. All these years, many people lied to us. My wife and I finally got to the bottom of it after investigating for years. We were fought hard by everybody, but we managed to obtain the trademark. So we’re talking about that and figuring out the future of that, but we’re talking."

That was a cool interview, thanks! I always dig those little peeks behind the curtain making these songs we've heard a million times.

Most interesting and different content parts of these were Schon got into some of the trademark stuff...

Shit.

I never knew that Bob Coburn died. Back in 2016, at that.

I was just going to post that hopefully he'd have Journey on Rockline to talk about Freedom. I decided to check to see if the show is still on the air, and I saw that he died.

I'm sure that a lot of you were already aware of that. But I never heard about his death until now.

I loved Rockline, I used to listen to it a lot back in the late 80s and the 90s, and whenever he'd have a band on that I like a lot and I found out that they would be on.

Interesting trying to follow Escape's track-listing and begin the album with a piano intro...

I'd like to submit Lay It Down as Journey's heaviest song. Has Neal forgotten about this song?

Seriously one of the best interviews I’ve heard. Pats himself on the back a lot but still. Great mood, great outlook. Talks about lessons learned from JTT, talks a little about the lawsuits. Still complimentary of Smitty even after the fallout and very cool stories about Perry.

So, it would appear no "50th Anniversary tour" in 2023.

He’s been saying for awhile that the 59th Anniversary might have to wait a year or two because of all the other plans.

Now even the 59th Anniversary is on hold.

Just kidding, I know that it was a typo.

So, in all seriousness, was Schon's plan of having Santana tour with Journey for the 50th Anniversary? Or was it for Santana to tour with Journey before they get to an "Anniversary tour?"

"They also brought in bassist Todd Jensen—while Jackson recovered from back surgery—after he scored a recommendation from an unlikely source.

Steve Perry, of all people, came to the soundcheck for our Hollywood Bowl show when we were playing in LA,” he says. “We were talking for a bit and, low and behold, Steve apparently used Todd when he went out with his solo band to tour his album. And so I went, ‘Well, Todd knows the material.’ Steve liked his feel too—Steve, being a great singer, knows a lot about where the drums should sit, where the vocal’s supposed to sit, where the bass is supposed to sit.”

Well thats a pretty interesting bit of info there. I obviously kinda wondered if Perry might have nudged them in his direction since the coincidnence of Jensen suddenly getting the gig after not hearing the name in a looooooong time came seemingly out of nowhere since Neal usually gravitates towards the same players on albums nowadays. I guess that was the case! I'm sure all that good will is completely gone now with the newest legal action, but its cool to hear Perry actually got to the point of checking in with Neal and the guys at a show.

Wow, that is very interesting...and very bittersweet considering all that has happened as of late. Todd was in Hardline with Neal, which always made me wonder if he nudged Todd towards Steve in '94. I also like how Neal tip toes around Smith being one of their options to be their drummer again.
This band is six degrees of dysfunctional separation. Just unbelievable.

Duh, I completely forgot Todd was in Hardline. For some reason that album doesn't immediately come to my memory like all the other side project stuff does. So there actually WAS a connection between he and Neal going back a ways.
