Steve Perry's higest notes

What are some of the highest notes that any of you have ever heard Steve Perry sing?

Which songs were they in, and which particular words or sounds was he singing/vocalizing/screaming in those songs?

Example. In Sweet And Simple at one particular time he sings out "It's what I like to do" at a high range that is incredible. Or during the guitar solo of Wheel In The Sky he is doing that really super high vocalization. Or at the end of Mother Father he's doing similar vocalizations to the one in Wheel In The Sky.

Any other particular moments that stand out to any of you?

The WITS and Mother Father high notes he does are legendary, and will always be my favorites. He also has quite a few on infinity.

Patiently live in Houston. The vocal range and control that he has here is unbelievable. And considering he's doing this at the END of the show....just untouchable magic right there.

Love hearing Perry singing pre-Perry material! And a great example of how Perry AND Neal (and obviously later Jon) are integral to Journey’s success.

It is probably not the highest, but during Lay It Down, he hits some really high notes.

Yes. It has to be on either Infinity or Evolution.

The studio recordings that have always come to my mind are in no particular order.....

Something To Hide.
The vocalization that Perry does during the Wheel In The Sky guitar solo.
The one specific time in Sweet And Simple where he sings "It's What I Like To Do" ultra high.
Homemade Love.
Lay It Down.
The vocalizations at the end of Mother Father.

But there have been several times that Perry has sang live with Journey that he hit super high notes that were higher than what he originally sang them on the albums.

Also, I have always thought that Perry might have sang some parts of the demo for Something To Hide higher than he did on the Infinity album?

The demo is very raw. He doesn't go for the high closing note. No reason to since it's a rehearsal/demo track. But plenty of effortless high notes are still there.

This goes back to the early 90's but this subject came up on the Journey mailing list. Jason Kelty was active and posting at the time. He is the lead singer of the tribute band Escape. At that time, Journey was inactive and Escape was the closest thing that existed. In fact, I think he was the closest to Perry that has ever been. It was really cool to have him posting. I don't remember what he said the highest note was. But, he gave the song and the actual note and everything. I brought up "Get Your Face Outta Here" for the same reasons. I remember this because he kind of discounted it. I don't remember what he said...but, to him, it was more jumping into falsetto and ad-libbing and not really "singing" per se...those are my words, not a quote or anything like that, just my impression. He was always very gracious, and I know he would say it was still impressive, but to him it was more about singing actual lyrics than things like this....and I assume even the stuff at the end of "Mother Father" or "Wheel In the Sky" he would feel the same way.

Funny thing is that Jason Kelty and myself are both from the Cleveland area and I used to go to a lot of Escape's shows in the 1990s, and I would talk to Jason a lot at the time. I had him over to my house one time in the mid 90s and we traded Journey bootlegs.

Anyway, I say it's funny because a lot of people have thought that he should have been hired by Journey to be their singer. And it would have been ironic if I could have said that I had a future Journey member over to my house to trade Journey bootlegs before he got the job in the band.

I had a good friend who passed away back in 2015 who was a singer and he did a great job of singing Steve Perry's songs. He did a great job on most of the high range singers songs. He lived in a suburb of Akron called Mogadore, which isn't far from Cleveland. I believe that based on what he told me once before that Jeremey Hunsicker lived in Mogadore as a kid?

So there are a lot of great Steve Perry soundalikes in the Cleveland and Akron area.
