Lollapoolaza package

Postby Eric » Fri Dec 16, 2022 1:00 am

I got mine and I think it captures the magic vibe they had that night. Very much like it for my collection.

But anyone have an idea what this weirdness could be: I ordered the Blu-ray and DVD/CD package through Frontiers. Got 'em yesterday. This morning I got a package from Sony Music with the Blu-ray. I didn't order another copy and why would it come from Sony?

I was at this show and had a great time. This was a landmark concert, Journey headlining what might well be the biggest music festival in the US, opposite someone as contemporary and relevant as Post Malone.

However... this blu ray sucks, the frame rate is like 3 fps. I can't believe Journey didn't get better footage than the stuttered frame rate which was livestreamed to Hulu during the show. I think that's how they ripped the footage.

Unbelievable.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

Glad I didn't shell out. Arnel sounding rough is enough...

Frontiers is distributed in the US by Sony.

My take:

1. I bought the standard DVD version and I thought the DVD quality was fairly decent.
2. I don't know if I just had bad speakers but the mix was a little weird.
3. It seemed like Deen was genuinely happy to be there.
4. I was surprised to see Jon sing Just the Same Way. He's no Greg Rolie but it's great to hear them play that live again.
5. Deen was definitely carrying the load on drums, Narada was just playing along.

When I listen to the audio of this set, it just feels like bad karaoke, sadly.

Damn, Perry is hard to replace...

No one proof read the packaging. They misspelled Marco's name and Todd Jensen is credited as the bass player. I am guessing he did some overdubs.

He was sounding so much better on the tour later. Apparently it was a mix/monitor issue and it was causing him to over sing, which made him sound worse and more vocal strain. I was surprised they released something from before the adjustment was made.

How much does the Blu/ray cost?

I assume that it's on Amazon?

I was fortunate to see the band at the Aragon ballroom for their extended “warm-up” show the night before, and thought he sounded fantastic. He was probably as well-rested then as he’s been in some time. Being their first show back from the pandemic, the band was on fire, which I’m sure carried over to the following night, especially considering the much larger crowd. Sad to hear about the monitor mix, hard to sing when you can’t hear yourself.

Does the video quality of the Blu/ray look good to you?

I enjoyed this set live when it aired but have little interest in adding it to my collection for the following reasons:

-Auto-tune/post-production tweaking is apparent on Pineda's voice.

- Narada and Marco are both gone from the band. Neal has since openly criticized Marco's playing. This lineup is just a strange blip in Journey history.

-Artwork is a crude ugly stencil.

Other than just for collection purposes:

- I love Arnel on Still they Ride (even live at the time on Hulu)
- I love what Marco did during La-Do-Da
- I love Wheel in the Sky - it was just an outstanding version and Schon was fired up
- Its the first time we have "Just the Same Way" on DVD and the only other live version since Captured.

You can also feel the energy of the show.

The 2001 DVD was great and we all still love it (I think?), but from what I understand Augeri's vocals were polished up significantly for the whole thing.

Not even sure how you can compare the two. Fans were starved for content back then. I had to go to a Suncoast video at the mall and special order 2001. The band has a much higher profile now and fans should expect a quality product. This ain't it.

I got the package for Christmas and just opened it today. It’s sad they have Jason Derlatka listed in the band, but no pictures of him in the insert. They have Marco Mendoza listed as Marco Mendez and not pictured. They have Todd Jensen listed, but if my memory serves me right he didn’t perform at the show and wasn’t even in the band at that point. Makes me wonder if he redid Marco’s bass or did the overdubs.

So what I’m saying is a total hack job on the packaging.

The 2001 DVD was also promoted well, bits of it were on the BTM, and it was released by Sony. It was also filmed for the DVD...not broadcast on TV.

The Lollalalpoolooza DVD comments make it sound like it is simply the TV broadcast upscaled to DVD/Blu-ray quality - that seems very bad. From the way it sounds it seems like the quality of a good bootleg. Why support such an inferior product.? If they can release crap and make money from it, they will just keep releasing crap.

You just described exactly word for word what I said to someone on FB about the audio quality of the vinyl record.
