1983 Sound Check....Unrelease Frontiers Song?

Postby Art Vandelay » Fri Mar 10, 2023 8:37 am

Here's a cool little video that I came across. It's from a 1983 radio broadcast of the Dallas show soundcheck. Just lots of noodling around on stage. At around 4:10, they start playing something and Steve is singing lyrics to it. Nothing I've ever heard before. I've heard clips of the band singing harmonies of a song they never actually played during the 1980 tour. On the Blue Jean Network documentary. I wonder if this was the same thing. Just a rough cut they would use to warm up with.

Anyway, it's something fun and different from the drama that's going on now.

I was always curious about this clip..........I dig the vibe of it! I wonder if there's a studio demo out there in the archives?

That’s really good! I am not at all familiar with it.

Thanks for posting.

What else I found to be really cool with this was the station ID promo that Steve does. I remember hearing the exact same thing on 98 WCAU when they played JFK Stadium in Philly. I was too young to go to the show and wasn't a super fan at the time, but I knew that my friend's older sister and her friends were going...so it was a big deal to me in that way. Although I haven't heard that station ID in 40 years now, I could remember it clearly...and it sounded just like this.

Fun fact - the person holding up the lighter in the aerial shot in the Send Her My Love and the Frontiers and Beyond videos was one of the group of friends who were at the show. She's wearing our grade school's team jacket.

I don't know what that song is, but it should have been the first track on Raised on Radio which should have been called Freedom.

Wonder how many unreleased tracks there are for Frontiers? This was a hella productive period for the band. Too bad they are missing out on a 40 year anniversay release of Frontiers.

I just wish we could get boxed sets of these anniversary releases, and actually have the powers that be dig deeper into their archive of the individual album recording sessions instead of just polishing old b-sides and slight remixes like "Only Solutions". It does seem like the Frontiers and especially ROR sessions had quite a bit more unique songs that we've never heard. In the case of ROR where they've gone on record saying they had recorded a decent amount only to start all over again in a different direction. Stuff like this jam was probably laying on the cutting room floor, never to be heard again which is a damn shame. I get that Sony is lazy as hell in putting together great archival Journey products, but it really feels long overdue.
