Freshen Up the Set List

Postby JourneyHard » Sun Mar 19, 2023 4:38 pm

Here is a suggestion of how Journey can freshen up the Set List for the Freedom Tour 2023:

1. Only The Young
2. Neal Solo
3. Stone In Love
4. Don't Stop Believin'
5. Lights
6. After Glow <---this song is so crazy good. They have to do this one live.
7. Raised on Radio <----This could be a blast. Neal can really rock on this live.
8. Who's Crying Now
9. Come Away with Me <-----This is your one chance to play the new material.
10. Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'
11. Together We Run <------This is the Freedom Tour. Isn't it?
12. Jon Solo
13. Open Arms
14. Faithfully
15. Holdin' On <------This would be awesome live.
16. Neal Solo
17. Wheel In The Sky
18. Separate Ways
19. Be Good To Yourself
20. Any Way You Want It

It’s not the Freedom Tour. It’s the 50th anniversary tour and only about 16 people in the audience know about Freedom and only 10 of those want to hear the songs.

According to their website, it's still the "Freedom tour" (link below). Like everything else the band does these days, they are just making it up as they go.

I could be wrong but the radio ad I heard, I thought they said, "The 50th anniversary Freedom tour". So, they seem to just be slopping it all together.

As for the set list....it's a crappy anniversary set. They shouldn't even be touring with Toto, but do a 2+ hr show on their own. Something similar to the anniversary tour they did with Augeri, except limit the old songs. Maybe do ONE song from the pre-Perry years, "Of a Lifetime" or whatever. It doesn't matter. After that, there are so many songs they could add to celebrate Infinity through ROR,

IMO, they should pick/choose and rotate any of the below and then fill in the time with whatever GH's:
Open the concert with Majestic
Winds of March
Opened the Door
Patiently
La Do Da
Do You Recall
Felling That Way/Anytime (together)
Just the Same Way
LTS/City of the Angels (together)
Lights/Stay Awhile (also together)
Line of Fire
Where Were You
Walks Like a Lady
Be Good To Yourself
Girl Can't Help It
I'll Be Alright Without You
IMO, they should end the pre-encore set with "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever"...which should have been tried during every tour from ROR on.
I would be happy with an Escape/Frontiers set where they start with DSB, do a medley of other songs, and end with Separate Ways...they could touch a bunch of songs and save a LOT of time.
They should touch the Augeri years with AT LEAST "Higher Place"
Then pick ONE song from each of the Arnel albums...or maybe rotate a few band favorites.
They could also do a version of the acoustic set, maybe with different songs...maybe Patiently, Faithfully, Lights/Stay Awhile
I would also not mind bringing back "La Raza del Sol"...maybe end the acoustic set with it.

The above may not all be GH, or "Dirty Dozen", but they are all songs that Journey fans should know and have been in concert in the past, or distant past. I'm also not trying to exclude concert staples (Wheel In the Sky, Any Way You Want It, etc), but not EMPHASIZE them and instead put all Journey history at an equal level.

This is supposed to be a CELEBRATION of 50yrs of Journey...but it's not...it's just another tour.

And, three of those songs are instrumentals...two of them by Neal. Drop them and include three of the songs I listed...then you can brag about it and have a point.

Who is bragging? I said 21 was a good number and it needs to be tweaked from night to night. I've also posted recently that the setlist wasn't as varied as last year and I wouldn't be seeking another show to attend as a result. You and TNC want to harass anyone who doesn't profess anything but hate right now. It's not healthy or productive and you two remind me of Perry-only fans in the late 90's. I do, by the way, agree that ALL solos should be dropped during the 50th anniversary tour.

To add to this, they only performed the first 1:30 of "Patiently". Wasn't even the entire song.

It could be better for sure. It is longer and better than this, though:

https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/journey/ ... 48e45.html

They’ve gone from C+ pre-COVID, to a solid B last year to a B- this year. In my opinion.

These were their best I saw:

https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/journey/ ... 7a0d5.html

https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/journey/ ... 8cac4.html

That 1998 show also had an “intermission” where they played Of Lifetime and something dedicated to a “Szabo”?

Then you were not paying attention to what was being said. Throughout the 90's and 2000's, Perry fans would:
defend the indefensible, examples :
firing Steve Smith and Ross Valory.
Perry taking control of many management things from Herbie
Even though Perry took the power, his fans refused to make him accountable for essentially breaking up the band.
They refuse to admit that Perry was only PART of why Journey was successful. Perry does not equate to Journey.

So, basically the same type of bullshit that Neal is pulling right now. His fans are making excuses and not holding him accountable for his own stupidity in making decisions.

So, yeah, I react the same way towards Schon as I did to Perry, and treat his wonky fans the same way. Schon does not equate to Journey.

This tour is a farce. It is NOT a 50th anniversary tour celebrating Journey. It is NOT a "Freedom" tour promoting the album. It's just another Dirty Dozen "Give Neal Schon your money" tour with a hush puppy thrown in for people like you.

Ok, dogshit may have been a bit harsh. There was always something magical to me about those live performances of this song back in the day. Something in my opinion that could never be touched, so I'd prefer to have that song be left alone.

STR is classic, but the others? Neal's instincts for what songs to play suck. Absolutely nobody cares about La Do Da.

While it's not one of my favorites by any means, I would much rather go to a Journey concert at this point and see/hear them play it than to see/hear Lights for the 10 billionth time.

Wheel In the Sky is the one hit song from the Infinity album that I never get tired of. If Rolie is sitting in with the band I would love to see/hear them play Feeling That Way and Anytime. Otherwise I can take them or leave them live anymore.

I like the song Lights, but at this point I'd be happy if they drop it from the set list for quite a while.

From the Infinity album I'd welcome them playing La Do Da, Can Do, Winds Of March and Opened The Door in concert now.

I don't think that I have ever heard them play Can Do live, whether in person or on a recording? It would be awesome if they would play it live!

I know they played it in '78 and maybe '79 on some FM broadcast I can't think of the date or venue, but I know I have it here someplace.

In the meantime, here's a lipsynced version from a German TV show from '79 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EksfzsllrHo

EDIT- Found a decent audience recording from 2/26/78 in Fresno where they played it - https://youtu.be/D57TuoaOa3Q?t=1180

Thanks for the info!

I know that Can Do is usually not a very popular song among most Journey fans. But I like it a lot. I don't see anything about it to dislike? I like Schon's guitar on it, and Dunbar's drumming, and I love the blending of Perry and Rolie's voices on the chorus.

TBH "Can Do" never really did too much for me until magically one day a few years ago I randomly was listening to a bootleg and it was in the setlist and I kinda dug it as a surprise. Its decent enough IMO now, though it still seems kind of like filler material on "Infinity" with all the other awesome moments on that album.

True. Most people don't know about Freedom, but these same people do NOT care about Mother, Father or Where Were You or anything that isn't on the Greatest Hits Album. So, it makes sense to play five new songs off of Freedom instead of deep cuts that nobody knows from the other albums.

I think I’d prefer I’d they had 4-6 songs they changed up each night. There have been 3-4 really good setlists this tour like that but not enough to motivate me to look for another show…
