Reelz TV have announced that the special "Journey: A Voice Lost...and Found" will be premiering on the network on Sunday, June 25 at 9pm ET/ 6pm PT. Here is the synopsis: Journey dominated the American music scene in the 1970s and 1980s with their epic arena rock anthems and power ballads.

Frontman Steve Perry was dubbed "The Voice" thanks to the untouchable vocal stylings that burned up the radio waves and made him a household name. But the bigger Journey became the more miserable Perry grew. He was the rare rock superstar who craved anonymity more than applause.

Then at the height of the band's success Perry did the unthinkable quitting Journey. That alone should've been an absolute death knell for a band so defined by a single voice. But Journey's other longtime members refused to give up the dream and brought in a new singer to keep the music going.

Fans were livid that anyone would dare to try to fill Perry's shoes. Shows were played in empty houses and threats were even made against the band. When that replacement singer didn't work out desperation forced the band to turn to YouTube for the most unlikely inspiration.

Journey members Jonathan Cain and Deen Castronovo are joined by former members Jeff Scott Soto and Narada Michael Walden, as well as Sirius/XM radio personality Eddie Trunk and former Journey producer Kevin Elson to tell the band's amazing tale. Journey: A Voice Lost...and Found is produced by AMS Pictures.

The description of "shows played in empty houses" is bullshit. They made $$$$ through all 3 post-SP singers.

This rubs me the wrong way :? We will see how the Augeri years are portrayed out but, seeing the people who are involved I'm sure it will be with respect.

Empty houses?!?! Nope

Some of the first shows in the fall of 1998 on the first leg of the Vacation's Over tour were empty. I saw them in late October at the OnCenter in Syracuse, and that holds 7k-ish and they drew 1,600-1,800. Less than a decade later they sold out a 16-18k seat venue for the State Fair well in advance.

The show description is a hatchet job.

Makes it sound like they were playing to empty venues until Arnel.

Most bands that replace a singer know real quick whether it's going to work out (Genesis, VH3).

The revisionist history is gross and the worst part is, the band is complicit.

We've gone from Neal saying "our fans love him" about SA to pretending the dude doesn't exit or openly mocking him on Twitter.

We are talking about Neal Schon here, that tactic can't be all that surprising to you by now.

Also, they imply that Perry was called "The Voice" through the 70's and 80's. This is simply not true. He was never referred to that way until Bon Jovi did in 1987. Then, fans picked up on it and ran with it. If he was called that prior to Bon Jovi, I would like to hear evidence of it.

If he was being called that in 1983, I would think the "Frontiers and Beyond" documentary would have used it. It is so overly dramatic, calling Perry "The Voice" would have played right into the style of the narration.

If they are referring to Augeri, it's also not accurate. JSS was the one who "didn't work out" prior to Arnel.

I saw them close to when JSS stepped in for SA in St Louis. I didn't even know SA had left the band until I got there that night. They played a large amphitheater here. They opened for Def Leppard and there had to be close to 25-30k there. It should have been the other way around, as it was clear most of the crowd was there for Journey.

It just feels like they have to keep spinning stuff to keep selling this crap.

That tour was billed as co-headlining but IIRC Def Leppard closed every show. (Maybe an agreement after SA “stepped down”?)
I saw the show at Red Rocks, met JSS before the show. He was a surprise to most of the audience for sure. He best fit the Frontiers ROR material, his voice was uncanny to that era Perry. It felt right that DL were headlining that show and I think the audience was accurate to that. Sadly, our seats weren’t too good (Red Rocks or TM had just changed their GA configuration) and the wind was blowing across the stage severely affecting the sound. We left 2/3 through DL. This was also during Joe’s vocal issues before he got it healthy again.

No, Journey was the first band with or without Augeri. Yes, it was said to be a coheadlining tour but it was very obvious that Journey was the opening band. They had no light show really. No special affects. No special stage set up. Def Leppard came on and blew away Journey with their full stage show. This was not like Main Event where Styx, REO and Journey put on comparable shows. Journey was not at the same level Def Leppard was. JSS put forth a commendable effort and the songs were fine...but they were obviously not at the top of their game.

Not to relitigate the past, but the Def tour never should have happened. Augeri was drowning and they kept booking tours. After limping through the Generation tour (barely), the band should have stopped and figured their shit out.

Agreed! Of course, If we're gonna revisit they probably should've considered a break somewhere BEFORE the Generation tour. That tour was too big an idea/undertaking being an album release AND Anniversary to miss. And since SA didn't make it through the tour goes to show he needed some sympathy and consideration before that instead of road-dogging it to build the audience at his cost.

I caught that tour in Buffalo after JSS stepped in and the crowd there seemed to be heavily slanted towards Journey too and it was one of the better Journey shows that I've saw so far.

I'm going down a conspiracy theory rabbit hole here but they ran Augeri into the ground back then and I've wondered more than once if there was more to the story than just rebuilding the brand. There had to be some expensive financial reasons back then too, like the Elmo Agreement or the Trial By Fire tour that never happened.

I saw the same show in Buffalo (Darien Lake) and the crowd was definitely more into Journey.

I don't know about this Journey Documentary, but remember on December 15, 2023 the documentary on Herbie Herbert will be released. Now, that is the one I want to see. We should learn a lot of stuff we didn't know before. I just don't know where it will be released. Perhaps Netflix?

Article about the new documentary including a brief video clip.

Cain says he had to call Smith/Ross personally and tell them they were let go. Never heard that before.

Damn, I hadn't either. Sounds like Cain became the hatchet guy for the band even early on before he was voted to call Perry and let him know what was up in '97 or '98.

I was going to bump this thread up tonight as a reminder since the show airs on Sunday.

If i understood it correctly, it looks to me like JSS was requesting that someone get him a recording of the show?

Out of all the music writers on the planet they really had to get someone from Rolling Stone, the magazine that hated on Journey the most? It seems like there is a lot of conjecture and opinion from him on Perry’s thoughts.

Even Castronovo and Cain were drastically exaggerating how poorly the band was doing in terms of ticket sales when they were touring with Augeri as the lead singer.

During the Augeri years Journey were playing and usually selling-out venues in Cleveland that seat 13.000 to 20.000 seats.
During that time period the smallest crowd that I ever saw them perform at (In person) was at a County fair in Pennsylvania that had to have sold at minimum 5.000 seats.

I noticed that too. I saw them in Buffalo back then with Styx and REO Speedwagon and they filled the 18,000 seat arena up there. I was disappointed that they glassed over Arrival too, that’s still one of my favorite albums.

Pretty sad that I have zero interest in spending even $5.00 to watch this. I'll just wait until it hits Youtube, I guess.

Deen and Cain lived it, so who am I to argue? However, I have seen and continue to see the Arnel lineup at some of the very same venues I saw the Augeri lineup (ex. Borgata AC). So imo this is mostly BS.

That's basically what I thought. I have Sling but to get Reelz or Peacock, they are in add on packages that are around $6/month. Just not interested in spending that.

I figure it will eventually be on one of the other services, Netflix, Amazon Prime, or on YouTube...or AXS TV has a lot of these shows as well. Not a big deal for me to wait.

The tour with Styx and REO was the "Main Event" tour. I saw them in Omaha in the third row...before the fan club seating. It was mostly sold out at an event center that I'm sure held over 10,000. But, that was a very early tour for Augeri. They also played the Fairgrounds here in Des Moines, which holds around 10,000 seats. They sold everything but obscured seating. For comparison, the second tour with Arnel also played the Fairgrounds. They sold out and added some GA overflow seating, which also sold out. During JSS, they played the CY Stephens Auditorium in Ames, the basketball arena for the Iowa State Cyclones, which seats, I don't know, well over 10,000. They didn't sell it out but it was pretty full, well over the 10,000.

So, IMO, they may be selling more tickets with Arnel compared to Augeri...but it was not like Augeri was selling less than 10,000 seats and playing casinos and theaters...causing the band to struggle to make money touring. The other factor in this is Perry was getting a larger percentage of the band's revenue during the first three albums/tours with Augeri...and tickets are a LOT more now than 20yrs ago...so, the split for "Journey" was less money over all. So, I can understand why the band thought they were struggling more with Augeri in retrospect than then really were.

I will admit that I didn't see them back in 1998 when the first started with Augeri so they may only played 500 people back then but who knows.

On their first tour with Augeri they played at the Cleveland State Convocation Center which seats about 13,500. It looked sold out to me. Most of the shows that they've played in Cleveland/the greater Cleveland area since then, including the ones with Augeri, they have played at either the Blossom Music Center which seats 20,000 or Rocket Mortgage Field House which also seats about 20,000. And they have sold out or damn near sold out all of those shows.

When they did the 30th anniversary tour where they played with no opening band, they still sold out Blossom with no opening bands. That same summer Def Leppard played at Cain Park which I think may only seat around 1,000 to maybe 2,000? So Journey were massively outselling tickets over Def Leppard (At least in Cleveland) at that time. And Def Leppard were huge here in Cleveland in the 80s and pretty much the 90s as well.
