Journey 50th Anniversary Magazine

I just got home from grocery shopping. While I was at the checkout line I spotted that they have a "Journey A 50th Anniversary Celebration" magazine for sale.
It is published by 360 Media Specials.
With Tax it was slightly under $15.

It has 98 pages.

The front cover is of the Evolution or Departure era with that lineup of members. And it says Journey very large on the cover.

I haven't started to read it at all yet. But when I do I can mention some of the content on here if anyone wants to know.

Anyway, some of you may want to go to a grocery store or magazine shoppe soon to try to find it.

I read the whole magazine. They quote most of the key members of the band, but no, it's not written by Schon or anyone else from the band.

There are also quotes from Herbie Herbert.

There are lots of band photos.

I picked it up last week. The cover is the oval band image from the back of the Captured album.

Each month or so, a different band gets this type of publication made for them. They're cool collectibles. I was always hoping they would do one for Journey, but never expected it.

Lots of cool photos, some that I haven't seen before. I haven't read it yet, but I did notice some errors with the photo captions. Identifying the wrong people, wrong year/era when a photo was taken. There's a picture of Perry from the ROR recording session that says it's from 1980. There's a promo picture of the band with 'new drummer Steve Smith'. They identified Ross as Aynsley Dunbar. Dumb stuff like that, which takes the polish off of the final piece IMO.

Neal says the magazine "is a bootleg." I assume he means it wasn't authorized by Journey / Freedom LLC. As the print industry continues to die, it is not uncommon to see a variety of special edition magazines on all sorts of trademarked entities (James Bond, Batman etc). I was surprised to see a nice big picture of Augeri on one page. Overall, the magazine seemed amateur.

It's probably not authorized. But it's not a bootleg. It wouldn't be distributed the way it is otherwise. Neal's a dope.
Visually, I think it looks really nice and not amateurish at all. Money and effort went into printing it for sure. I've been an art director for print and digital publications for 30 years now, so I acknowledge the visual behind it. I haven't read it yet, so can't speak for the article content. But judging by the caption errors, not much proofing went into it editorially.

Even the cover is from the Captured album and Neal could probably sue them for that one thing. Do they give credit to any of the quotes? Obviously, they did not do any interviewing so everything comes from other sources. It seems to be a quick money grab by the publisher...and if you look, the publisher has done it for a lot of other bands, too. It's sorta "meh" to me.

You can see a few preview pages on some sellers pages. I think I may have it on Amazon.

Anyway, I doubt the pictures printed on the Captured album are "stock photos". I also saw what looked like a video still from the MTV Escape concert. That's not a stock image either. These are things that are probably either trademarked by Journey or owned by whoever owns the rights to those videos, MTV or Journey, whoever. Yeah, they could have paid to get the permission to all those pics, that is true. But, I have a feeling they didn't.

Correct...imagine if Journey had done this and sold it at every concert and on their website. It's a no-brainer. But, Neal has set so many bridges on fire that it would probably be difficult to pull off.
