I figured I would create a thread to include any clips of Augeri on this summer tour with Brett Michaels and friends. I already see a video mislabeling him as Perry.

Someone posted clips of a recent Hugo show as " Steve Perry Live 2023 " or something like that and several of them. This is getting ridiculous . And of course comments are disabled . There are people that thought some insurance lawyer in the UK was the real Rod Evans of Deep Purple ,so I am betting people will really think a sound and look alike singer really is Steve. Rod hasn't lived in the UK in 50 years and never was a lawyer.

When I was a teenager I was a cook at a fast food restaurant in a suburb of Cleveland. I worked with a girl who's father was a used car salesman in the same suburb. The girl that I worked with told me one day that Steve Perry bought a used car from her father there at the dealership.

I told her that I was sure that Steve Perry did not come to an Ohio used car dealership to buy a used car, but she kept insisting that he did. So the next day she told me that she asked her father about it again, and he told her that he had sold a car to a guy named Steve Perry, but it wasn't Journey's Steve Perry.

That was a number of years before the Seinfeld episode where George buys a used car that had been owned by a guy named John Voight who he thought was the actor Jon Voight.

Of course there is also the movie producer Steve Perry. I wonder how many people see his name in the end credits of movies and they think that it's Journey's Steve Perry that produced the movie?

I always liked to imagine it was Journey's Perry sitting at a computer embracing his inner Star Wars geek writing this during his downtime.

From NJ last night (07-16-23)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IguoSp9Q4VQ (DSB) - some nice extended highs at the end. About as good as I've heard him sing post-Journey. Good for Steve.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la8Vgsf0zuA (SW) - maybe a rough start, but some cool ad-libs. Steve clearly ate his wheaties / feeling his mojo on this night.

SW and AWYWI sound real good. But everything sounds slowed down, loses some energy.

DSB still slower but sounds good.
SW is stronger (but the comments are not kind). When I hear Steve sing this I really miss his voice with Journey.
AWYWI sounds good with good energy.

I'm sorry, Steve needs to retire. I hear nothing good in those recordings other than when the band drowns out his voice. I met him a couple times and all I've ever read and heard from him confirms to me that he is a great guy. But that just does not sound good.

I saw the Party Gras show in Camden, NJ last night. He sounded very good and frankly good, bad, or indifferent, the crowd was eating it up, singing along, and loved every minute. Nobody noticed or cared if he didn't sound like 1998 vintage SA. It was nice to see him on the bigger stage again, and it reminded me of seeing him with J on the Arrival tour. He had energy and commanded the stage in that smooth way he did with J when he was out there. My only complaint was that maybe due to curfew issues on a Sunday night, the overall set was a little shorter, and songs were cut for Steve, Mark McGrath, and Bret in the main set compared to some of the setlists I've seen from previous shows.

Thanks for sharing. Really nice to hear this. Based on the clips, I agree, he does sound good.

Having played this on keys endlessly with cover bands and four Journey tributes, the keys in Separate Ways are wrong. They actually decay, they do not sustain the whole time in the verses. It doesn't take much tweaking to get a synth to do that.
It's a less is more approach and one of the great things about the song.
Cain hasn't forgotten , clip of him playing it correctly from 2023:

As long as we're on the topic of how Augeri sounds... this clip of Arnel? YIKES... he's really struggling.

Steve was having a pretty decent run on this tour. Now it sounds like he's back in the weeds. Allergies? Cold?

Ya, definitely a bit off... Could be a number of things or just a bad night and his voice wasn't cooperating. It looks like he was struggling a little more that night based on the faces he was making. Still happy for the guy getting the opportunity to be out there.

I love Augeri and his contribution to Journey, but all of these clips of him in this thread are really tough to get through.

When I first heard his solo album I thought that he sounds terrible on the first track of the album too. Fortunately, I think that he sounds good through the rest of the album.

I think he just sounds/sings differently than he used to and/or after all these years and such, this is just what you get. The solo album is good...but I think his vocals sound a bit different than they did back in J. That said, I understand that was vocal issues and many years ago, so his current tone must be what gets him through when singing in the higher range. As someone who saw one of the Parti-Gras shows, you couldn't tell live if he was having a tough night, he sounded good, but you weren't hearing anyone's vocals as much as some of these YT videos.

He said in a podcast that some of the tracks (including that one) were recorded last and he was coming out of a covid battle. There are other songs (Never Far From Home, Bated Breath) which are as good as SA has ever sounded.

Agreed. He's using some sort of blend of head/falsetto to get through these gigs. Axl Rose is doing the same thing. Makes them sound like Mickey Mouse.

I still couldn't pick a song I like more than Lose Yourself the last few years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmO9XA7TKn8
(I know I've beat this to death but the song truly resonates with me.)
