I realize Perry has ALOT of time on his hands, but I personally think it's a little blasphemous for this to be put on the new 40th anniversary edition of Frontiers. He has essentially erased and replaced the contributions of everyone but himself from this version. Where is Neal's guitar?

Not sure if this was ever posted here....a guy from the Eels doing a cover of "Only The Young"...slowed down, acoustic, with a band of kids.

Perry seemed to be a big fan of the Stranger Things redo of 'Separate Ways', and said that he wanted to work with Bryce Miller.
I guess now we have it. Guitar, no guitar, new drums, new keys, all new mix. Doesn't bother me. (I doubt it bothers the band either.)
I don't know what you call this genre, but I like it! I wonder what else is in the works?

It popped up on my Spotify play list the other day when it was released. Absolutely atrocious.

We give NS all types of grief for his bad decisions. This in my opinion is as selfish of a move as Perry has done. Terrible decision making to butcher a song like this.

Having said that, it will probably make him a lot more money. So be it.

This absolutely sucks as did the "remix" of Separate Ways. How can you call it a remix when there is nothing left of the original except the vocals? Just a vanity project for Perry.

This one is OK. I think most people would disagree with the "Separate Ways" remix, especially in the context of the Stranger Things trailer...it was awesome seeing that. It was the perfect song for that season and trailer was perfect.

Totally agree. I think it's a dick slap in the face to the other band memebers.

As MASSIVE of a Neal Schon fan (Musically speaking) as I am, I'm totally fine with the Stranger Things/Separate ways remix. It's pretty cool.

I haven't heard this OTY remix yet. But from what is being said here by most of you, it sounds like this was Perry giving the rest of Journey the finger and then mooning them on top of it.

New OTY is fun. Don’t think people need to get up in arms about it

It wasn't a new Christmas song.

You think a fun throwaway track is worthy of being included on a 40th anniversary edition? How about something actually living up to the legacy of the album and the band?

I think it would be fine to include if other "rarities" were included. But you are right, a song that removes 4/5 of the band on it's own is not worthy. I'm not as bothered by it as everyone else, but I also don't see the need for it. It doesn't add value anywhere. If it was in a car commercial or ends up in Stranger Things, then maybe it fits something. On it's own, it doesn't.

So, wouldn't Schon and Cain have to sign off on this version? I guess doing it live by Perry or any band is okay, but recording and publishing it would be a Nightmare or Elmo Partners thing, no? And if not some legal entity, then at least writing or recording credit would make Perry only 1/3, thus he wouldn't have the power without at least one other. But maybe, since the only apparent original part of the song being used are the vocals (save for some new keys covering guitars), then Perry can claim ownership to just that? What about the lyrical ownership?

I just don't get the whole "snub to the band" thing. You'd think that Schon and Cain would have to acknowledge this somehow.
Does anyone here know exactly how the legal aspects of re-writing and re-recording a song works?

Btw, I wonder if the only way to include these Bryce Miller covers was to make it part of a separate disk?

Frontiers - 40th Anniversary Remastered
"...Certified 6x Platinum, the package contains the hits "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," "Faithfully" and "Send Her My Love" plus a bonus 7" featuring new remixes of "Only the Young" and "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" by Steve Perry and Bryce Miller along with the original single versions of "Only the Young" and "Ask the Lonely" that were left off the original vinyl release due to time constraints."

If it were not released in this way, I doubt it would be released at all. Then what? So, really, I don't see what difference it makes.

There really should be an expanded box set for Journey that includes all eras of Journey and rare songs like these...but I do not see that ever happening.

This is convenient, can be thrown away or used as a frisbee.

I wonder if this remix is going to count as his annual holiday release this year and thats all he plans on putting out?

I'd be surprised if he releases anything new. I get the feeling he's crawled back into his hole.

He's occasionally active on Instagram. But he's basically turned into a lounge singer.

BTW, this was 6x platinum way back in the 80's, and Escape at 8x. I thought Journey sued Sony to get these recertified because they wanted the royalties for the updated numbers?

Also, if this were on CD, I would consider buying it. I don't get the vinyl craze.

Steve Perry is the Man Behind The Mask. Oh, wait, the Man Behind The Mask crawled out of his hole, not back in.

I think that people from our approximate generation (assuming that you're somewhat close in age to me, 51 in my case) are feeling nostalgic and that's why they are into the vinyl craze right now?

CD is the superior format from an audio standpoint.

Some people might also like the large covers of records too?

Funny thing is that from my understanding this 40th Anniversary vinyl is clear? A friend of mine told me that his record player won't play clear vinyl records because some sensor in his player can't detect clear vinyl.

I just turned 50, so I'm right there with you lol. I don't own a record player, so I don't usually get caught up with vinyl purchases. The only times I have bought vinyl recently were for the special edition autographed items offered by Perry and other artists who I follow. I chose the vinyl copies because I do appreciate the full size artwork and the aesthetics and presentation of it all. The purchases have all come with a digital download, so that's how I get to listen to the music. The signed vinyl are framed and on my wall.
